John, My Indie got off the intake today and found the gasket between the intake and heads completely gone on one side and half gone on the other...so that has no doubt been contributing to the backfiring and lean running.

I am working on gettting power steering in the Cobra.

It appears to be a mustang 2 manual rack. I am thinking I can buy a power rack for the mustang 2 and swap them out. They also sell hoses that are ford on one end and chevy on the other.

Looks like I can get 2.5 turns lock to lock. I'd like less....anybody have any experience with this subject?

Did I mention the steering is massively difficult. Although the car is very light, the tires are very wide. The manual rack on the car is 2.5 turns lock to lock. Having tried manual steering on my Miata and gone back to the stock power I decided to put power steering on this cobra. Just driving around town is unsafe because you cannot change directions quickly enough due to the muscle needed to turn onto a side street.

I researched options. I looked at the electric power steering unit that is in my Lotus seven replica. It is based on a small chevy (cruz?) and has some good features including an adjustment for assist. It has zero feel though and it takes up a space the size of a medium sized muskmellon. I don't have room for it.

My manual rack is a flaming river and is mustang 2 based.

So I have ordered a t-bird based power rack which I believe will bolt in. The body of the rack is aluminum. The rack has 2.5 turns lock to lock. I would like less but could not find one. A saginaw pump will bolt onto my Chevy block and hoses to match the odd ends can be bought. I'll wait to order them after the large stuff is installed. I also ordered an aluminum ps pump.

Anybody need a mustang 2 based manual rack with 2.5 turns lock to lock with 3,000 miles on it? I'll sell it reasonably. It's about 45" long overall.

Today my K and N filters came in for the four webers. Wrong parts again....my third shipment. Drat!

I've been going through Summit. I think I'll try to talk directly to K and N in order to get the right part.

So I decided to dig deeper using a picture from the internet and determined that the box had the right number on it but had the wrong base plate. (manufacturer error) The other three kits were correct 100%.

So I just have to return the one kit. Wooo Hoooo!

Looks like I can run in XP class scca and minimum weight is 2300# so not too much ballast needed.

Absolutely agree with your decision.

About 8 years ago, my BMW E30 lost power steering function, a bracket that secured the pump to the block broke. No way to reliably turn the belt til I fixed it. I thought I'd try it without it and I did for about a year. Then I noticed I was having some persistent pain in my forearms. Not debilitating but I didn't want it getting worse.

I had originally thought going with forced manual would be good exercise. These days it's become a challenge for me to know what is good exercise and what is just more wear and tear and miles on the odo.

I finally remounted the pump. Much better. And it turns out that using a power rack with no fluid power is harder than using a pure manual rack.

Yes. The rack on the Cobra is designed as a non power device but it is quick and the tires on the cobra are wide. Its probably ok on a track only car but not for the street and autocross.

I got the cam and delivered it and some other stuff out to my Indie's. The Kirkey seats I bought won't fit without modifying the seat or the door of the car so I thinki I'll be getting some different seats.

I'm really getting excited to have the engine running properly!

Today we checked the new power rack for fitment. It will bolt in where the old manual one was. We also looked around under the car since it was on a lift and admired the many unique and well thought out parts and pieces. We also got the size of the master cylinders...7/8". I called Tilton and they are sending me a sheet of facts and figures to send them for a calculation.

I looked up the Don Olson Racing oil pan and found it is baffled, has a scraper and holds 10 quarts.

Yikes!
