Porsche Panamera Diesel

https://www.roadandtrack.com/new-cars/car-technology/a14417347/heres-how-cool-the-porsche-panamera-diesel-is/

Quote:
We're not getting the diesel-powered Porsche Panamera 4S in the US. We asked Porsche, and a spokesperson told us it doesn't have "any plans to sell diesel models in the US." But, we think we can still take a moment to appreciate the greatness of the Panamera 4S and its 4.0-liter diesel V8.

We were awoken to this oil-burning Panamera's charms by a Top Gear drag race video that features the Porsche outrunning an Audi SQ7, which uses a similar engine. The Panamera put down a 3.8-second 0-60 mph run, and hit 100 mph in under 10 seconds. Those are impressive numbers, especially by big diesel luxury-sedan standards.

Porsche's 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 diesel offers a respectable 416 hp, but it's its 627 lb-ft of torque that's the bigger deal here. That's as much torque as the 680-hp Panamera Turbo S E Hybrid.

After buying my Cayenne I started wondering if they build a Panamerica Diesel. They do but not sold here. My Cayenne is plenty fast with its 3.0 v6 version of the same engine (I suppose).

When did you get a Cayenne?

The missus and I have been chatting about replacing the IS250 with a Cayenne... A buddy who deals in cars made us a great deal on a 13 Cayenne Turbo in trade for the Lexus, but the missus doesn't think it would be the ideal car for her 50 mile round trip commute! I've tried to convince her, but don't think she likes my "sound" logic of needing 500HP+ for commuting.

A guy I used to work with had a VW Touareg V10 TDI, that thing was a beast. Mileage was awful for a diesel, but the torque...

I bought it a month or more back. It is very satisfying to drive. Just back from a trip to arkansas,, texas and NOLA. I had a milestone in my driving experience of settint the cruise on 90 to keep up with traffic. No fuss....though its actually doing 85 at that point.

I had two road only tanks fill up, one got 27 mpg with some winds and the other 28 running 75 to 85 corrected for the error. Steering brakes and handling excellent, ride firm but very controlled. A pleasure to drive.

After vw bought back my jetta diesel wagon I searched at length and decided on this with diesel. I had to put in another 5K over what they gave me for my wagon.

It is interesting. I get nothing but positive responses to this Porsche labeled SUV. when driving the mercedes's I often got people expressing jealousy even when driing a 20 year plus year old 115, 123 or 126.

The youngsters like it! Old foggies just probably figure its a Ford.

It is pretty generic looking except the nose and hood looks a lot like a 911 or panamerica with the lower valance sort of extended down and tilted like all the other such suv/crossover vehicles.

The lexus is a car I might consider. On certain models it is said to be the most reliable car on the market today. Toyota had warned they would be reducing the quality of their lower end cars. I believe they have with the failure of a substantial number of detail items on the wives much cheaper model. Just stupid stuff up to now but still much more than expected. For the accumulated millage.

Oops, I'm a little late to the ball. I didn't realize that this car is no longer being made for any market. I guess the whole lot is tainted with the VW emissions scandal. And consumers are not choosing them enough:

Those can still be had. Would be a sort of decadent pleasure but I have to wonder about maintenance at this point.

Holy crap, the above post is sort of a record in the naive understatement category:

The Volkswagen Touareg V10 TDI Was More Of A Nightmare Than You Can Possibly Imagine

Quote:
Then these Touaregs joined the used market, like silent bank account killers.

How destructive are these things to your bank account? Please read what happened to Jalopnik reader JoeFromPA:

"Let me share some of the joys of owning one for exactly one year:

1. One turbo failed. This required dropping the entire drivetrain out of the bottom of the vehicle. ~30 hours and special equipment and a ~$1400 turbo later, it didn’t work right. And that was the dealer master mechanic “fixing” it. I won’t get into things like the dealer breaking and then re-installing the broken driveshaft, as I blame that on the dealer.

2. One battery failed. The one under the driver seat. The driver seat that requires a 17mm triple square socket to remove. Because one battery failed, a complex and untraceable decision-making process was performed by the vehicle and it decided it wouldn’t start with either battery but it WOULD continue to allow battery drain from various accessories. I had to replace both batteries ($250/per battery at walmart rates believe it or not). One battery was under that seat, the other required 18 10mm bolts to be removed. EIGHTEEN."

The main issue, as JoeFromPA notes, is that the whole SUV is so tightly packaged, so finely engineered that much of the vehicle has to come apart for repairs. This is no small task:

I believe alternator, turbos, thermostat/cooling system work.... you have to drop the motor. And when I say drop the motor, I mean drop the drivetrain. And when I say drop the drivetrain, I mean use a special lift and tools that can handle the weight of an aluminum-block 5.0 liter diesel engine and transmissions.

Damn, that sounds like a nightmare. Maybe an Audi V12 tdi is a better idea.

I wonder if the electronics are simpler than on a newer vehicle? Actually the above description might fit any number of newish cars. Dropping it all may not be that bad. He does not say how much it costs or the mileage on the vehicle.

The newer MB V12TT cars require the engine (or subframe) to be pulled in order to service some things. I don't think the Audi V12 TDI is any better.

Some of the newer MBs with the V8TT require the front subframe to be pulled. A few friends who work at MB say it's a pain in the ass the first few times, but it's actually not too terrible once you've done it a few times...
