trust, or trust with experince
yesterday morning a 6 am,driving to wal mart. I live in the country 8 miles to town. doing 40mph,see car in north lane stopped person outside waving flashlight.Thought police,or wreck.Looked carefully car with young gals 3.looked made sure no dudes hiding.She had hit curb going to fast and blew tire out.I looked front wheels going each other different ways,tie rod.
Told my wife later,and grandson over heard,said I was stupid to stop,might have killed me,so what,over 60 I don't care.He said he just floored by them,he came up the road behind me. He has carry permit,and 45 cal. But this is not watts,so I was not afraid. Feel bad I thought I raised them to care.

It's tough to know what to do in these situations. there are plenty of documented stories where people "staged" an accident just to get the jump on some unsuspecting motorist.
I usually call a towing service and let them know there are stranded motorists at mile marker such and such. They can take it from there.....

Call 911. Identify yourself and location. Turn around and go back. Look over situation. Use your instinct.
FWIW, I have always stopped to help after 911 call. Never had any problem. Like you, I live far out of any town and highly unlikely a crook would set up shop out here. Slim pickings. I’m armed.

Bad advice. fifty years ago things weren't so bad. Nowadays, people regularly stage car problems, limp around on crutches, etc. so they can rob someone.
It works in reverse as well. Neighbor had a flat tire out on a deserted two lane highway. Along comes what initially appeared to be a good samaritan who turned out to not be so good. Asked my neighbor if he needed help changing the flat tire, then suddenly pulled a gun on him and forced him into HIS car. My neighbor barely made it out of that situation alive.......

I used to do research for others but found that unless THEY did themselves, it meant little. I'd suggest typing in the following into google, bing, etc and follow the results for at least 20 pages....
911 mishaps 911 call deaths 911 calls injuries 911 operator TRAINING (or lack thereof).... etc. etc etc. your mileage may vary but as for me and my house, I can screw up my life for HALF THE MONEY.

Helping Hands
Some folks are just paranoid or selfish .
I used to stop always to help, less and less as the years go by, I still stop when in the middle of nowhere as people CAN DIE in the Desert here, most habe no water, sun protection etc..... As mentioned : go a ways, call 911 and give a report, go back and from a safe distance tell them help is coming . Me, I'll stop, not afraid like some here seem to enjoy being .

Sure, I might be speaking to those who don't care. And I understand that.
Many might be familiar with the story of the Good Samaritan. A legal expert stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher,” he said, “what must I do to gain eternal life?” Jesus replied, “What is written in the Law?
