It is probably the sound of a fine 6 cylinder engine.

You don't think the Japanese make some of the finest engines on earth?

OK, that is true! They sound very nasal-ey and blatt-ey.
The true sounds come from the various Alfas I've had. I don't know how they do it really. People sure make a lot of dough offa these stupid kids...

You said you had the cat and muffler disconnected? Did you drive it like that to hear what it sounded like?

So if I get this right, your exhaust was still going through the cat...? That probably wouldn't sound very good...

FWIW, I was lubing my rear suspension linkage on my Yamaha V-four and had to remove the mufflers.
What the heck, sure I started it...!
The weird thing about the sound? It sounded just like a 67 big block Corvette! Weird huh?
I guess the firing order is the same as the chevy, and has a ninety degree V. Small block chevys do not sound anything like the big blocks. (definetely a sweeter melodic sound).

Other cars with good sounds:
SAAB 99/900 four cylinder
Chevy small V-6 2.8 liter! I had a Fiero GT, great sound, no power.
Any Alfa
Fiat twin cam
Porsche flat six
Any straight six
Small Ford V8 (289, etc.)
Chevy 327 V8

Any others?

Yes it was still going through the cat but..... The cat is nothing more than hollow metal on it.

That would mean that all the honeycomb stuff was blown out of it?

Hmmmm, perhaps that is what a resonator does, improve the sound? Put a glass pack muffler on the end of the system?
