What? Push in clutch, move gear change lever to neutral. Shouldn't matter if the engine is running, right? This thing isn't automatic is it? It's supposed to be the Ultimate Driving Machine. How can it be the Ultimate Driving Machine and be automatic?

If properly maintained I feel that ZF builds a good transmission. It is the ones with 250k miles on them and never serviced that seem to be problematic in my opinion.

The ZF units are great. I also loved the DCT that I had, wonderful transmission and lightning quick.

finally
Got it high enough to remove shield and put it in neutral. Drained oil and it looked like it had 20k+ miles on it but was changed ~750 miles ago. Owner came up today and is having it hauled to the BMW dealer (thank goodness). I did not take anything apart but based on how hard it is to turn engine over with 4' cheater bar it ain't gonna be pretty inside the bottom end.

Cruddy Oil
So, is it possible this thing hasn't been getting regular hot oil & filter changes ? .
I'm keen to see what the inside of the oil pan looks like . I resurrect lots of oldies that were neglected to death and it's not unusual for fresh oil to break loose all manner of sludge and crud that's been collecting for 40,000 miles .

When owner came to shop yesterday evening he did say that BMW Savannah replaced filter housing gasket at around 90k miles. Last oil change was done by one of those quick lube oil change places. I drained all the oil out and it did have 6.5 quarts in it so at least they put oil in it.

If The Engine Is Toast,
Maybe find a wreck/burn job/theft recovery and yank the engine out of it ? .
I've overhauled two Mercedes diesel engines and WOW are the internal hard parts $pendy .

uh oh
I had a coworker come by in a 2015 3 series that he purchased for his daughter and he is getting the "low oil pressure" warning. I told him about the one that was in with the locked up engine. Oil pressure at idle was around 20 psi and about 40 at 3k rpm which, a quick google search, indicates normal. And I thought the neutral thing was the problem. Someone missed their mark on these engines.
