Question Laptop ?

My old HP laptop is getting slower and slower plus the exhaust blows hot almost constantly, I fished it from a Dempster Dumpster ten + years ago and now I feel a vibration in it and wonder of the hard drive is getting ready to pack it in .

What's the current laptop to avoid when buying used ? .

TIA,

I don't know what to avoid but I can make a recommendation. The institutional Dell laptops are pretty solid. I bought a used D630 with win7, upgraded to win10 and a SSD and it's been my daily use PC for about 6 years(so far). Total cost-less than $200. I bought a newer Dell E6420 as a backup but have not used it yet except to keep it updated.

Thanx Tony ! .

I'd hoped someone would say Dell, I'm on one now, it was new in 2017 and seems to work O.K., I prefer Windows 7 to 10 .

? Will it be possible to have a computer shop transfer everything to the next unit ? .

TIA,

I like HP's but I too,buy used, rebuilt pc's.Much cheaper, and adding solid state hard drives are cool. They last a long time to buying new wal mart crap.

Thumbs up More Help

Thank you Sir .

I used to work with electronic waste and the Vendor told me to grab what I wanted, he was bemused that I couldn't buy a new laptop .

The HP was good and has soldiered on for years but I'm afraid of loosing all my tech stuff and addresses, photos and so on if the hard drive packs it in .

The battery's been kaput in the HP for years, it only works when plugged in .

I second the Dell laptop path. Throw a cheap SSD in a Dell Latitude (E6540,E6530,etc) and you'll be pretty set. I think I picked up one on ebay for $200

I switched to the iPad Pro two years ago at the suggestion of wifey. Wish I had listened to her sooner but that's another story...….

Post Apple Vs. Windows

I tried the i-junk, very hard to use and not worth spit IMO .

I don't understand what the SSD thing is, in addition to the laptop ? .

How do I know an E-Bay used one will be any good ? .

TIA, this is an informative thread .

Another thing with the institutional Dells is there are lots of inexpensive parts on Ebay if it breaks. I was involved with IT in my job and the Dells were very reliable. They were used for a specific lifecycle-I think it was 5 or 6 years then replaced. The used ones had the HD's pulled and were sold to a third party. I upgraded the RAM to max on my D630 and it runs very well for an inexpensive laptop. I should switch over to the E6420 because the screen is brighter and the keyboard is backlit. BTW-I keep all my data on an incripted, password protected flash drive and back it up to a standalone HD. I don't like keeping data on the laptop. More trouble but more secure.

Thanx again .

I was just looking on craiglist and saw some for under $100 ! says needs install disc to make work properly, I went through that a while ago, buying a genuine Windows 7 disc was *very* expen$ive ! .

I don't need fancy - schmancy backlit keyboard....

The city had mostly Dells and they seemed to work fine to me ~ the antique HP I got came from City Hall, some muckity-muck who got the higher end stuff I imagine .

I just want a decent one that has wireless and maybe a CD drive as I now have many shop manuals on CD ROM (is that right ?) discs .

SSD means solid state drive. It a newer style of hard drive. Its CONSIDERABLY faster than old school conventional mechanical hard drives. Often swapping in a SSD into an older laptop will breathe new life into it.

As with most ebay things you really wont. Generally speaking Dell Latitudes are pretty robust machine.

Thumbs up Appreciated

Thanx, now i know what SSD is, sounds good to me .

I've blown the fan and heat sinks clean before.......

I really think it's tie for me to figure out how to afford a decent working used 'Lattitude' laptop .

It's neat ~ no matter what I ask about here, I find people who know and are willing to help .

THANKS ALL .

I see some on craigslist that have wiped drives for $50, I don't have a Windows 7 disc sadly .

I'm currently on a Dell Precision 3510 that came from some high tech outfit that went belly up, it works fine but had no CD drive and also contains a bunch of programs I don't need / understand but it's fast to boot up and work .
