Finally, a pic of brookspw's 190!

Ok, you've heard about it; you've read about it; half of you have helped me get it running just about perfect and looking great. I have claimed that it is the sweetest 190 with 132,000 miles out on the road. It is a 1991 190E 2.6.

Here is "BlackJack":

It is 100% bone stock. I would like to replace the clear plastic assembly that surrounds the headlights. They are the only part of the car that gives away its age. Other than that, I may bump up the tires to a 60 from the standard 65.

Question Tire Size

brookspw,

Very nice. I have a '92 190E (2.3) and love it. Same color as yours w/ 139K. Mine's not quite as pristine as yours.

But I have question about tire size. I live in Maine, so I have both winter and summer tires. The winter Tires are 185/60-15, and the summer are 205/55-15 (I just bought the summer set) and the passenger side/front rubs occasionally. What size are yours?

Thanks in advance.

Mine are the standard OEM of 185/65/15. I believe that the 205/55 would bulge too much for the 6" wheels. I am going to put on 205/60. My guess is that the rub is the "bulge" of the sidewall on the strut/shock. Can you tell where the rub is?

Looks just like mine

I might save the time of taking a picture of mine and steal yours

I just put the second set of 205-60/15 on, I probably have all of two miles on them. Got a deal on Michelin Symmetry's. They seem good so far.

Great to see such a good-looking W201. One of my favourite Benzes of all time. And it's good to see it 100% stock: why do people think they can design things better than the factory? I suppose if I were in your hemisphere I would fit so-called Euro lights. But that is not a modification, rather you are returning the car to its true stock character. And they work better too.

As for tyres, I'd fit what it was designed to take. Best quality contis, too. Different sizes will make little or difference to the handling and lower-profile will only render the ride harsher. It's not as if it is over-powered (just right, I'd say).

I was mistaken about the size of the summer tires. They're 205/**60**-15, but they are not on the stock rims. They're on chrome MB 8-hole rims (6 1/2 x 15). I bought the wheels and almost new tires from a kid who was "upgrading" to a set of 17" aftermarket wheels.

They are rubbing on the front of the wheel well (on the fender) just slightly. It's easy to find because I can see where the paint is rubbed off, and it's making tiny grooves in the tire.

Brookspw:

I really like the looks on your car. Nice one, very nice.

Have you got any nice tricks to keep a car in that shape? What kind on chemicals do you use...just curios

I wish you many miles to go in that car...

Well, I bought it November 2001. It was a 1 owner -- doctor in town -- who had it serviced religiously at the dealer. Mechanically it was very sound. The paint was in good shape, but he had not been diligent about removing bird crap so it had a lot of etching on the horizontal surfaces.

Mechanically, all I have done is replaced the injectors and had the engine decarbonized. It runs perfectly. Oh, yeah, I also replaced the front brake pads and rotors.

On the paint, I have worked hard! To bring it up to "like new" status took wetsanding and buffing with a rotary buffer to get the etching out. Meguiars fine cut, and #9 keeps out the swirls.

Local TiresPlus scratched all 4 wheels when they balanced the tires so they paid to have them all refinished. I have a guy in town that does most of the dealer's work, as well as customizing the Benzes for the Tennessee Titans. He refinished them for $65 each and they are flawless.

I use Eagle tire treatment with the little foam applicator.

Other than that, I am very careful with what touches the car so as the keep the paint in tiptop shape. I don't let the car get very dirty. If it gets dirty, I wash it right away.

Thanks for the comments, brookspw
