It was in reality a horrific period of their lives. Your parents passed through personally. Many families where totally wiped out. I found it signifigant that at least most of the immediate family where not.

It never has really stopped unfortunatly. Women and children are still being killed. People wear blinders to situations. Mans inhumanity to others has always disturbed me.

If you speak German or have an acquaintance who does. If your father has not searched extensively. Or if your father has the name of that engineer that was good to him.I suspect he still has.

Some effort could be taken on to find his fate. Or even if he just survived the immediate period. I imagine all engineers where registered at the time. Perhaps your father did at some point. Although it might be worth a probe again with the internet of today. I am certain your father would appreciate it.

Thanks.

Did you tell him about my dad?

davidmash 10-26-2019 11:11 PM

I did. He said the war ruined a lot of lives.

barry12345 10-27-2019 04:13 AM

The second world war because of the extent of it. Even at the least damaged totally untold millions of people. Russia claimed total fatalities of 25 million souls alone.

Future history may have to write more about that period. Some if not many things still need a much better explanation. Than has been offered.

Will read it before I head to work.

David, I read the whole story last night. Your Dad is pretty amazing. I wish the broad sweep of his story were more unique. But it is not. For me, some of the tiny details he gave startled me from complacency, like the shoes at the Holocaust Museum. It becomes real and it is terrible.

Thank you for posting this. The best way for people to know the reality of Naziism is stories of survivors. I am glad your Dad survived to tell his story, History.

.while my grandfather in germany was shot in front of my mother for helping jews.
My uncle had a different story, forced to sleep on open deck with other black sailors, and made a Navy mule,as most blacks, carried shells, and bombs by hand.
My real father, uncle's bro went to korea,as a pole jockey, climb a pole and saved a man shot by sniper.

We went to Auschwitz with my dad in '05. The guide basically let my dad give a lot of the tour. She. We went to the building with the shoes... It was a sobering experience to.say the least. They Ask had a room with glasses, hair, clothing all side by side. Hard to explain the feeling that comes.over you when you think of the cold utilitarian nature of the nazis.

The weird thing was all through the camp my dad was fine. Across the street was a synthetic fuel plant where my dad worked for a while. There was a memorial out front. That is where he broke down. The plant was still operational when we were there.

I'm.glsd he survived as well for obvious reasons. Something I have been think of is that were it not for my parents suffering, they would never have met and I would not have been born. Not sure how to feel.about that. Not that I have anything to do with it but it is weird to be grateful that they came together the way they did.
