Question Why Do They Rock

I'm asking about the crazies and mentally unhinged that so often rock back and forth, forth and back constantly .

I was watching a woman do this at two different locations to - day, several hours apart .

Most may be uncontrolled actions. I have no ideal of the causes.

Possibly the worse case I know of is where a pornographic type film played over and over in his mind. All the time he claimed. It was always present and in the background.

Where I grew up there was a person that stood on the sidewalk and lurched at cars passing all day long. This went on for all the years I lived there. At least to my knowledge nobody made fun of him.

Post Rocking

Mostly they rock from the waist up .

I too have seen many, many do this over the years, they stop when ambulating but begin anew the moment they stop .

In the 1970's there was a guy who come as regular as clockwork, stop across the street and back up against the wall and begin a swimming motion with his arms as his head scanned the passing traffic left and right .

He'd go on for a while (I no longer remember how long) then abruptly stop and walk away normally .

I rock back 'n' forth in public/around strangers. I have never liked being around people. Makes me nervous. The rocking movement has a very calming effect on me.

Ooooh! I betchya I'm gonna catch it for this post, , , , ,

Why do people watch golf on TV? Why do they go fly casting? Why do they vote republican? Boring, repetitive, self-effacing. But not crazy. It seems that when the brain is overwhelmed with stress, it defensively goes into closed loop mode, evidenced by repetition. You should think of these people with greater tolerance, it could happen to you.

Oh well, I've got a girl with a record machine
When it comes to rockin' she's the queen
We love to dance on a Saturday night
All alone, I can hold her tight
But she lives in a twentiest floor up town
The elevator's broken down

So I walked one, two flight, three flight, four
Five, six, seven flight, eight flight more
Up on the twelfth I started to drag
Fifteenth floor I'm ready to sag
Get to the top, I'm too tired to rock

Self soothing or, self comforting. I have twin autistic grand-daughters. This is how they sometimes cope. It's actually fairly common

No, I don't think anyone will find this bad or wrong .

I also dislike crowds, I've been caught in riots more than once and it's really frightening, I'm 6' tall and over 200# yet I was being pushed around like a leaf, very scary as my then wife and 6YO son were with me .

The whole rocking thing interests me .

I think this is a large part of it in perhaps many cases. For some seemingly bizzare motion disorders it will be another issue as well. I suspect we all have a little of the issue. The majority of people including myself like rocking chairs. Even though we on average are not always rocking them when in them.
