One nation, tracked

This is behind the NYT paywall, but it is worth reading if you ca. Consider what is happening in China.

https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2019/12/19/opinion/location-tracking-cell-phone.html

Quote:

EVERY MINUTE OF EVERY DAY, everywhere on the planet, dozens of companies — largely unregulated, little scrutinized — are logging the movements of tens of millions of people with mobile phones and storing the information in gigantic data files. The Times Privacy Project obtained one such file, by far the largest and most sensitive ever to be reviewed by journalists. It holds more than 50 billion location pings from the phones of more than 12 million Americans as they moved through several major cities, including Washington, New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles.

Each piece of information in this file represents the precise location of a single smartphone over a period of several months in 2016 and 2017. The data was provided to Times Opinion by sources who asked to remain anonymous because they were not authorized to share it and could face severe penalties for doing so. The sources of the information said they had grown alarmed about how it might be abused and urgently wanted to inform the public and lawmakers.
They were able to track named people. It is an interesting and unsettling article.

Quote:

IN MOST CASES, ascertaining a home location and an office location was enough to identify a person. Consider your daily commute: Would any other smartphone travel directly between your house and your office every day?

Describing location data as anonymous is “a completely false claim” that has been debunked in multiple studies, Paul Ohm, a law professor and privacy researcher at the Georgetown University Law Center, told us. “Really precise, longitudinal geolocation information is absolutely impossible to anonymize.”

If you have nothing to hide, what are you worried about? The majority of the sheeple are in a coma and believe the government would NEVER abuse their track-your-movements-24-hours-each-and-every-day database.

I am too old to ever see it. Yet still believe. At some point there will be no physical money.

Complete records will be available on all your financial dealings down to the last dime. I really expect this to evolve with time.

We as a couple today actually use almost no actual money and records exist of all we spend.

For example buying used on many items when not using cash. Could be flagged as lacking the sales tax on the transactions.

We live in a modern society. For better or worse. We are all posting on a public web site. Our names and locations can be tracked. None of us live off the grid. The amount of info that is accessible on each of us may vary but there is quite a bit out there and more than most would admit or realize.

I know I do not have any say in it and I will continue to take advantage of the technology that makes my life a bit easier. I rarely use cash, I use GPS and smart phones, I have a google mini in my house, I pay my bills electronically.... etc.

It is what it is. The cat is out of the bag for better or worse and it is not going back in.

Pre-internet, private investigators had to make a physical trip to the court house, interview people, etc. when attempting to gather information.

Today, they sit in front of a computer and in ten minutes time know more about you and your family than they did before the internet came along.

There was a string of jewelry store robberies across the southeastern US a few years ago, including one about two miles from my house. The way they caught them was to compare all the cell phone pings near the stores at the time they were being robbed. One of the robbers had a cell phone and his number was the only on all of the ping lists.

If you're up to something... leave you cell phone at home.

Tracking people and their movements may be more advanced than the average person realizes. I do not know how long the satellite intelligence is kept.

The quality of their cameras is astounding. I assume they do not record ground movements in cloudy weather. Or after dark. I just would not bet on that though.

This does no matter to me if true. Should the public be given more information about it?
