I was out early yesterday morning looking for somewhere open to buy milk. I didn’t make it to the Walgreens. I found a service station that actually had milk that wasn’t out of date.

Well we are into the leftover phase of Christmas day. I try to pick a turkey size that eliminates it almost. I just cannot seem to pull it off. Almost half the turkey for Christmas dinner is left over.

The son in law by custom provides a turkey for the new years day dinner bash. A 54 pound turkey has arrived. I am pretty certain it will not go in the wives oven. It is being frozen at this time so I can take it to a butcher. The wife suggested cutting it in half. People year over year are consuming lesser portions of turkey it seems. A twenty seven pound half is going to provide too much leftover.

You are what you eat scares me. People seem to load up on vegatables today instead. Another thing I have observed. In many cases in the day people went back for seconds. This seems to have also stopped. We all probably worked harder then.

Overall Christmas went well here. Other than a daughter approaching me and asking what was up with her sister and her husband. I had noticed he would only comment on a direct question and go back to his cellphone. Plus his wife wanted to be served by everyone.

All I could tell the daughter is something has obviously changed. If they ever do this again I will say something. They were also expected to stay over at the local daughters as they live a few hours away. They left for home instead.

There was no argument or disagreement. So I am far from certain of the reasons for the behaviors. It amounted to bad manners. I can only hope the reason is not serious. They also mentioned that they will not make the new years dinner. This is a first. There are problems in any family from time to time. Perhaps our luck has run out.

It just occured to me this is about the anniversary of his son's and her stepsons suicide. The local grandson was invited to go there on the bus last week and went. He came back with them. It may have been too much for them.

A lot of marriages don't survive the death of a child.

Yeah, that’s a tough one to overcome.

Thanksgiving Leftovers

I agree about the people eating less, I used to be famous for clearing the table, now I make a point of stopping eating as soon as I'm sated, SWMBO says I'm loosing weight and my pants are looser so YAY ! :) .

The other day she gave me a BIG freezer bag of 'meat for the dogs, mind the bones !' ~ .

I took it home to my pups and discovered about 1/3 of the turkey was in there, two HUGE un touched drumsticks and lots more ~ I pulled meat off the bones and fed it to them until they were stuffed, happy holiday doggies ! :D .

Changing eating habits is hard but worth it, my blood pressure was never high but it's normal now, always a good thing .

It's a very sad thing for any parent to out live their child, I have no idea how I'd survive out living my son .

Bad manners are never O.K. in any case .

SWMBO says "! I want a HONEY BAKED HAM for New Year's so I'd better get cracking  .

HUGE Turkeys

No, I don't mean 1965 Cadillacs..... .

Before my mother passed where she spent her last 20 years they had wild turkeys that all the old folks loved to feed ~ they were the biggest turkeys I've ever seen and had the helluva time flying up into the trees to sleep at night .

I asked her once if I could grab just *one* :P .

Can a turkey actually get to 54#? Dressed?

t walgamuth 12-27-2019 11:03 AM

from Googling:
The heaviest turkey ever recorded was living large at 86 pounds for a stag named Tyson. The giant gobbler was reared by Philip Cook of Leacroft Turkeys Ltd, in Peterborough, United Kingdom, and won the “Heaviest Turkey” competition in London in 1989. It has held the record ever since.Nov 23, 2016

I fully expect that op’ Philips Turkey could get more than a foot or two off the ground.

t walgamuth 12-27-2019 01:18 PM

What would an 86 pound turkey weigh dressed out?

Do you cut up venison steaks for Tacos or grind it? I have 17 Pheasant, 13 Quail that are loot from a couple of this years hunts and some venison steaks my son in law gave me. We’re planning game meat cookout for some friends in real early spring and I’m trying to come up with the tastiest way to prepare the venison.

My late mother in law was marvelous at cooking game, but we’re gonna have to learn to do it without her. The quail I have experience with. When I was younger most of my hunting was for quail. Pheasant are new to me, but I’ve had some good suggestions there. Hope to figure out something for the venison to round out the choices.
