"pocket rockets" sticker shock

i just read the R&T comparo of the Honda Civic SI, Ford SVT Focus and the Nissan Sentra SE-R. okay, ho-hum, BTDT - but then i checked the prices on them and they ranged from $17k+ to almost $20k! that's pretty close to the base price for the C230!!!

i remember my first "pocket rocket" (it actually had a sticker on the windshield that said that which i quickly removed) - a 1984 Turbo Colt that cost me all of $8.2k out the door. for the kind of money they want for these new models, i might go for one of the new Minis but a Focus? i don't think the SVT, SI or SE-R badgework are worth that much of a premium. what does everyone else think?

That's true Jim, seems steep to me, but I've heard nothing but good things about both the Focus and the new Mini (I'd love a new Mini) in both US and UK magazines. The Focus is rallied very succesfully around the work on the WRC circuit, and is hot seller in the UK at least. The Focus, by all accounts is a much different car than you'd expect your typical escort to be. The fact that the car appeals to a euorpean driving public attests somewhat to it's performance and quality.

You're right though, pocket rockets in my book are small, fun to drive, cars, that also should be relatively low in price, but you consider the ever-rising base-sticker price of any car these days and maybe they're not as bad as you think....

Regards,
- RYan

i suppose you are right about the Focus. for that matter, mr. bean's green mini must be looked down upon with disdain in most of europe. the allure probably has to do with the "uniqueness" factor . in america, a mini cooper or even a new mini, is not as run of the mill (at least in looks) as an SVT Focus which doesn't really look that different from the base model...

never liked those "no torque down low", high revving motors they put on those cars anyway. you have to go past 5000 rpm to feel what the excitement is all about. btw, that celica engine is the hot engine option on the new matrix. thanks, i'll pass...
