I hope all here are doing well .

Thursday Demarkis, my 13YO Foster boy and I went up to my place to feed and cuddle my dogs, run the usual errands, I realized I had quite a pile of read books I wanted to drop off at the new (to me) Little Free Library I found and as I was looking for new books Demarkis asked if they had any books he might like and could he take a look please ? .


CERTAINLY , come right over here and have a look take any that appeal to you .

He chose two, 'A Bug's Life' (cartoon movie a while ago) and another, interesting book "Tea Cakes For Tosh" by Kelly Starling Lyons, beautifully illustrated in water colors by E.B. Lewis .

A good book containing history, family over several generations dating back to slavery and at the end even a recipe for tea cakes (sugar cookies) .

Demarkis asked if he could read it as I drove, why sure ~ he reads out loud and poorly but got every word and the story and says he wants to keep it .

Looks like I'll be getting the boys a book case soon ~ Shirley doesn't enjoy reading and it was a real fight to get her to allow me to set up a book shelf in the house before the fire, most of the boys didn't want to admit they ever looked at the books but every now and then one would disappear, I'd told them that any book there was theirs to keep if they wanted .

Several of the local Little Free Libraries near me have the lower shelf dedicated to children's books so it looks like Demarkis (and hopefully Kenjay soon) will now begin reading for enjoyment, not just because they're told to at school.....

Encouraging children to read is one of the best things you can do for them. That was an excellent move.

We started reading to our kids every night at such an early age they couldn't have known what we were doing, but it was part of their routine. As they grew older they were so anxious to learn to read that there was no holding them back. Good reading skills seem to me to be mandatory if someone wants a good education or just want to learn about the world they live in.

Sadly, illiteracy in America has been increasing for decades .

LFL is an excellent movement, we have them all over Philly as well. More reading = more imagination = more creativity, good on you Nate.

Reading will actually increase their IQ.

My folks never read to me but they ordered National Geographic. I was always fascinated by the magazine. I always asked about and mom and dad said its all right there... read. So I did. Been reading ever since. Thanks mom and dad.

I used to spend hours at my aunts house at the holidays reading ng and looking at the bare chested native women.

The literacy rate in this country is 99%, and has been that way for decades.

That may be true but it does not change the good that Nate is doing with his foster children

1% does not seem like much unless you happen to be one of the 30,000,000 americans who are. Also the bar is low. To be considered literate by the standards I noted all you have to do is read and write a sentence about your life.

In a practical sense I think NAte is correct. Effective illiteracy is probably on the rise. The statistics are built on a questionable set of parameters.

Reading is FUNdamenatal to success .

Anyone who thinks illiteracy isn't increasing in America isn't listening to the educators and probably also thinks that 45 students per class room is O.K. too .

Never forget that while figure (statistics) don't lie liars love to figure......

I actualy am out there with the great unwashed and no, they have incredibly poor reading ability and comprehension .

Demarkis and I went back to drop off more of my books and he found a bunch more young folks book, one had a cartoon of a Ninja on the cover and is called " DATE LIKE A NINJA !" I told him I didn't think it a young persons book, he's reading it anyway and is telling me about the woman who wrote it and how she approaches date nights with her husband....

Pretty good for a 13Y.O. who often has to sound out the words to get them .

I figured something modern he'd know but he was asking me and I have no idea.....:confused: .

Iphone? Other than that I have no ideal. It could sound the same basically.

We all have to learn. At the same time some young people have so little knowledge to start with. There is not much they can really grasp easily.

I find that to answer some easy questions. I have to explain concepts in a broad way first many times. For example did you ever study the changes of state? Plus how they relate to energy amounts.

I assumed they still covered basic science today in schools. Reading and comprehending it remains a fundamental building block.

A relatively older woman taught me to read before I entered the school system. She was about seven or eight and I was between 3 1/2 and 4 1/2 perhaps. We played school basically.

She and her family moved away over the ensuing years. I wonder what else she could have taught me otherwise over the formative years. To be able to read and comprehend plans etc so early. May have been key to my developing an interest in building things from a very early age.

In retrospect that young girl turned out to be really smart. I saw the occasional refferances to her in the media over the years. She probably married and her maiden name disappeared eventually. Anyways I just had a look at the web for her with no results. I had no problem recalling her name. I never was certain of why she did what she did. I was the fortunate benefactor of it though. Perhaps she was just testing her abilities.

There's a lot of things in the world that I'm completely un aware of, my Foster boys constantly teach me .

Children understand far more than most adults realize.....

Many of the Foster children are young but going on 35 because of the lives they've lived before we get them .

Hey, I'm probably as outdated as you are, chief. To me, kids seem to desperately require stuff that I don't even recognize as stuff. When I was a kid, all I wanted was a 440 with dual quads. But this may be what she was talking about:
