Nate you're right about the barrel bushing having a good fit, having a good slide fit, proper barrel link and other things add up. My point was that a good, crisp trigger makes a lot of difference. Without that, the other mods would not offer much advantage.
Yeah if out of ammo it makes a reasonably good pair of brass knuckles and also in the dark, the sound of racking a round into the chamber would panic some folks. Yes, proficiency with whatever pistol you choose is paramount. Not only your marksmanship, but you need plenty of time just operating it. The simplicity of a wheel gun is a benefit in this area. Oh yeah, not to split hairs, but the 1911 now has a century of success behind it. Not just decades. Yes, it’s a great tool. Another back story: I field stripped a .45 in the Army quite a few times. After a little practice, you can rip it apart in a couple of minutes with no tools. Not long after I got out of the Army while working in a truck shop, a guy came in one Monday morning showing us his .45. He swabbed out the barrel and handed it to me. I opened the slide and saw a bunch of residue and asked him when he cleaned it last. He said “ I just got through cleaning it.” I told him that wasn’t enough and he indicated he was afraid he would not be able to get it back together. I started ripping it apart and he had a fit. We cleaned everything and put it back together with clean oil on the slide and link. He was amazed how simple it is. Simplicity was part of Brownings genius. They were not only simple to disassemble and reassemble, but simple to manufacture with the tooling of the time.
