Commercial vs REsidential ranges
Hi,
I need a new or good used 36" stainless steel range for my rental in Michigan City. The one that is in there (and not working well) looks like a commercial range but has electronic ignition. So I am looking at ranges. It seems 36" commercial ranges are very available but the sellers are sticklers about saying they are not for residential use. I am wondering what the difference is and if the commercial range would actually be dangerous. One of the sales people said they would be a fire hazard sitting next to wooden cabinets, and suggested the insurance company would not cover damages from one used in a residence? Any range experts out there?

I always heard that commercial ranges lacked the thermal insulation found in residential ranges.

If it is already set up for natural gas you could look around for a less expensive residential unit. If P.C. is correct, then the salesman may be onto something concerning risk of fire.

Again, if the salesman is correct and there were a fire that it caused, you could have problems with the insurance claim.

We buy commercial ranges at our Fire House but we kinda got the fire hazard covered. Check with your insurance agent about their requirements.

Commercial ranges lack insulation which in a commercial kitchen with giant exhaust hood running does not matter.
When Viking first started selling "domestic" ranges they would only do so if you also bought their range hood. I did a kitchen renovation for a couple that owned a 4 star French restaurant, and they put domestic gear in at home, because they had access to the kitchen in the restaurant. Their house was a converted barn, and their insurance co would not support a commercial range. |

Well that does that . I wanted to replace the wives stove with a commercial one. Some time this year. Never imagined an insurance issue.

Me neither. Another thing is that the commercial ranges have nearly twice the btu per burner. The commercial ranges also seem to be all or mostly standing pilot.
