I did my census on line yesterday. Some questions seemed inappropriate.

It asked for ethnicity, for example I put down German as that is nearly 100% of my ancestry, though my ancestors have been here since before the civil war.
that seemed to me to be an inappropriate question.

The congressional seats are divided according to population so taking the census will help insure that you are represented appropriately. Federal moneys are also often distributed the same way.

For Ethnicity I put down “European”. They don’t need to know more than that. If that. But that was how far I was willing to go.

It seems that you can call yourself ‘Hispanic’ if your ancestors never came from Spain, but if they did come here directly from Spain, say your father or grandfather, you might no be ‘Hispanic’, merely European.
