RO to fridge question

I have an RO water system and was wo seeing about running it to my I e maker on the fridge. Been looking on line about it and water pressure seems to be the question. K idea what's required. The RO tank has about 8psi in the bladder it I do not know if that equates to 8psi in the line. I do not have a water pressure meter.

Has anyone done this?

Fill solinoid is electrical? So should not be an issue. Other than a little slower filling that in itself should not be an issue.

Same if water was controlled with a mechanical float level. I know nothing about ice makers though

Go to the website of your refrigerator manufacturer, and see if you can download an installation manual. I just reviewed such a manual for a random Frigidaire, and it said that the water line should be between 30 - 100 psi.

The RO systems have very low pressure in the tank (<15PSI) and will cause the ice fill cycle to short-fill the mold in the icemaker. Some very old icemakers had an adjustment for the fill time that you could compensate, but pretty much anything made in the last 20 years will not. There's a flow washer in the fill valve that expects a certain pressure range to produce the correct flow rate vs. time for the fill cycle.

So yes, it'll work, but no, it won't work well. If you want filtered water to the fridge, you're better off buying one of the commercial style "ice machine" filter cartridges. They'll last months if not years in a residential application.

Bummer. That pretty much matches with some of the stuff I have read.

That sounds like the plan.

FWIW, you *CAN* run the RO to the ice maker if you have a very old ice maker. Our ice maker in our work refrigerator is from a 1970 Kelvinator (Fridge is from 1989) and has the fill cam adjustment maxed out and works fine from the RO tank under the sink. Occasionally will have a hollow cube or two, but for the most part works. Having a very long fill time is essential to compensate for the low flow rate due to low pressure.

My house doesn't have an ice maker connection so we use trays. The sink has a 3M filter cartridge connected to a dedicated faucet for drinking water and we use that for filling the ice trays. It produces crystal clear ice with no flavor, so that may be an inexpensive option. You can pick up the 3M kits at Lowes/HD/Wal-Mart for ~$50-60 and the cartridges last a good year or so (they claim 5000 gallons).

If it does not work well at exiting pressure. With a check valve in the line if it had an incorporated pressure switch on it a booster pump should do it.

Chinese items on ebay might do it. Cheap and probably the same stuff we buy here anyways.

That is to much effort for ice.

Sorry, RO = Reverse Osmosis. Its a water purification system.
