I met Stirling Moss several times at the Lime Rock Historic Festivals where he was the guest of honor. As I write this there is a poster over my desk from Historic Festival 30 that he signed for me.

One year we brought a busload of kids from Ronald McDonald House to the Sunday in the Park classic car show where they were the judges for the Kids Choice Award. There was a French family there who had brought their young son to NYC to be treated for cancer and they were staying at Ronald McDonald House, I talked with the father and he told me he was a big Formula 1 fan. Moss was before his time but he was very familiar with his career. He tried to get in line to get Moss' autograph but the line closed before he had a chance.

A short time later I saw them (father and son) on Sam Posey straight where Moss was one of the judges in the car show. Sir Stirling was sitting in a chair holding the young boy in his lap while the beaming father took their picture.

Today in his honor I am wearing my 2014 Lime Rock Drivers Club hard card that he signed,

RIP Sir Stirling you were a legend and a gentleman.

He was in the top handful of drivers of his era, generally known as the best F1 driver to never win the championship. No doubt he could have won numerous ones driving for a top team but he loved Rob Walker and liked driving British cars. His career was ended from a massive brain trauma in 61 iirc.

How he survived the elevator fall in his eighties was astonishing.

His attitude about safety devices was mystifying to me.

Very sad, I got to met him at Lime Rock a few years back, nice guy.

I couldn't believe the lap times he did in the vintage Mercedes, he wasn't even pushing it!
