No they are piston engines. The potential risks if anything goes wrong are absolutely scary.

All the fastest appeared to be jet engines to me.

Could have been. Yet they claimed they were pulling 10,000 horsepower out of a piston engine burning a very high amount of fuel. That would/could produce massive flames out the back.

That is basically a top fuel dragster engine in a boat. If they figured out how to put that power down without cavitation I am not surprised. Very cool.

Sorry to be a bummer man, but that strikes me as whack. Huge amount of labor and expense for a thrill that could very easily kill you. What the hell do you do with it?

Same reason many do crazy stuff. Man has always had the urge to break the envelope. We want to go faster, higher, longer ... than the person before. It wold be a rush to feel that sort of power and acceleration but I am pretty sure I would be to amped up to even remember it.

Exclamation

There's a resivoir not too far away where they do this, every so often one of the boats flips up and over and disintegrates .

It's a miracle the driver ever survives .

If you listen you can clearly hear they're piston engines .

And the top fuel dragsters and funny cars do a complete engine tear down after a sub 4 second pass, complete with clutches for the transmission also.

I live on a big lake and have several friends with "go fast" boats. The fastest I've been is 126 MPH. Wife road later and they did 142 MPH. We made a concious decsion not to ride toegether because we know it's dangerous.

I wouldn't ride at high speed with just anybody. The guy I rode with 1) is a former NASCAR truck series racer 2) is a former national drag boat champion and 3) has had the same boat (38' Skater catamaran hull with twin Mercury 1100 HP racing engines) for about 8 years.

We didn't go really fast very long. We cruised around 80 or 90 and then when the path in front was clear for about as far as you couold see (all the pontoon boats and jet skis headed away from our intended line), he would open it up and accellerate to the higher speeds. Rode maybe 10 seconds or so fast and then he'd back it down. Our 30 mile long lake is not very big at high speed.

If you're sitting in the front sea under the canopy, it is very calm. If you're in the back seat, your face looks like that NASA test pilot on the sled in the 1960's.
