AMC vows to bar Universal movies from its theaters after video-on-demand comments

Looks like a precursor of a new normal.

AMC Entertainment, the world’s largest movie-theater chain, said Tuesday it will no longer play any movies from Universal Pictures after comments by NBCUniversal CEO Jeff Shell that the entertainment giant plans to release future movies directly to homes on-demand.

A Wall Street Journal report Tuesday detailed how Universal’s decision to make the animated kids movie “Trolls World Tour” immediately available for digital rentals after its theater release was scrubbed earlier this month due to the coronavirus pandemic paid off, earning the studio nearly $100 million in three weeks, more than the studio previous “Trolls” movie earned in a five-month theatrical release in 2016. (That movie grossed $154 million at the box office, but Universal only made about $77 million; the rest went to theater operators.)
Could be interesting. With the quality of new TVs and sound systems, the home theater experience is not that far removed from that of a movie theater. Eliminate the endless ads and coming attractions, the high priced snacking, and often annoying surroundings, and movie theaters may be going the way of Blockbuster.

All good points but There’s something about going to the movies...call me old fashioned.

A buddy of mine and I go to the movies once a week (until now) and we enjoy it. I am part of the movie club with Cinamark. We go in the morning so the movie is $5. We get two free movies a months. We also get 20% off concessions. We each get a drink and 1 large popcorn that we split. All in it about $23 for the two of us each time we go.

I have a very nice 5.1 surround and a OLED TV with an extensive movie collection. I still like the large screen format, fresh pop corn (the micro wave stuff I have is not the same) and my Icee (slurpy). We will start going again as soon as we feel it's safe to do so.

Comcast/Xfinity has several movies on PPV that should still be in theaters

*with emergence of streaming, collections are pretty obsolete....but we will be prepared if “the matrix” ever goes black.

Post Direct To Video

This same old sky is falling, "movie theaters will all close !" fear mongering has been going on since the first VCR machines came out .

The fact is many still enjoy going to the show and the theater owners are changing and adapting to the perceived audience tastes, hence the proliferation of dine in theaters, I hate 'em but I sure do like watching that big old wide screen .

For us geezers there is usually one local theater that had a $5 Senior / kiddie day, that's when I usually go .

Thumbs up Drive In Theaters

I heard on the late night news that a brandy new drive in theater just opened in.... ?Iran? .

I miss the old Pickwick drive in in Burbank, Ca. ~ when my son was young I'd take him there as often as I could, he'd enjoy looking at the projectors and talking to the projectionist before settling in for some fun entertainment .
