I get it. Since you said 3.1 instead of 3.10 I figured 3:1. I doubt a 31:9 would be it to get your desired 3:44, because the pinion would have to be smaller or the ring larger dia .... err something. But if you are going with an entirely different housing ....

Crown Wheel & Pinion
I stopped by an old VW Parts /enthusiast / nutter buddy to - day, we settled into chairs under the leafy tree over his private air cooled VW junkyard and began chatting .
He's a parts guy with more old books than I ever remember , I'm a VW Mechanic who assembled many cars out of parts . Anyways, we had a long and interesting chat about VW transxales and ring gears & ratios... *IF* your race car has a VW R & P you're in fine shape, you just need to make sure and begin the search . FWIW, old Porsche 356's used the same VW R & P, the new ones out of Mexico are nitrided to make them stronger . Back in the 1960's Hot Rods didn't worry so much about proper tooth contact because they'd swap gears a lot trying to find that 'perfect' ratio and unless you pre loaded the tooth contact it'd last a long time if noisily before going kaput .

Ratios Vs. Gearsets
No;
Only one ratio, two gears . Divide the number of teeth on each gear to get the final ratio .

How to tell if it is a vw r and p? Would it have a vw part number on it? Seems like yes.

Usually but not always because aftermarket manufacturers don't always use the VW part #'s .
If you can post some pics of it that'd help, I'm thinking you only have the one rear end and don't want to take it apart and down the car....? . Is it an axle or a transaxle ? .

O.K., 4 or 5 speed, what raised, casted in numbers are on the out side of it ?

Wow~ that's a serious box there, full crasher, I bet it gets noisy .
I don't think you'll find any VW R & P sets with anything near those ratios ! . 8 bolt ring gear I see . I'm sure you're on other forums that will tell you the skinny about this box, it looks nice, might be a kinda-sorta copy of someone else's ? . I bee there are specific internal BMW parts used . I learned how to drive on crash boxes, they all said I had "happy feet" because I had no problems double clutching . We're going to need links to video of you tearing it up in this car .

I learned on a 59 Rambler straight crash.
This is a dog tranny which is not crash and does not require use of the clutch once you are underway. you can shift as quickly as you can imagine.
