We downsized

It is done: We sold the house and moved to a condo in an age 55 community.

Some things went like clockwork, other things were a torture.

We had an artisan refinish the bedroom set we got when we married 47 years ago, and it is beautiful. Like new. The moving crew was great, they worked with us, and did a bang-up job. So much for people who actually do physical work.

The paper-pushers, the banks and the attorneys, really let us down. Sloppy work, failure to associate evidence with the file, asking the same questions over and over. It was a mess. I was a paper pusher, and these people really sucked.

But, it is done, and we are moved in, and ready for the next phase. We raised our family in the house we owned for 35 years, and moving the stuff from that house was a hard job.

But it is a done deal, and we are going to make this place our own.

Downsizing is harder than it appears. Who knew it would be so hard? OK, my wife did. But other than that, nobody.

I am not looking forward to moving.

My wife and I moved after 27 years in the same house(that we built to be our "forever" home). Funny how things change and you don't want to be always working on your home and property any more. We were the people that everyone said would never move. Now we only have 1/2 acre and it's plenty.

I'll be moving out after mom dies. Been in family owned house for 12 years that was, when dad was alive, being left to me in will. Dad died, sis came around after being away for 40 years and conned mom into signing all 1675 acres over to her via warranty deed, payment upon death. It includes house I'm in, shop I built during 2011, and house mom is in. When mom figured out what had happened she called sis and told her she needed to sign it back over, sis told her from now on she would have to talk to her lawyer. That was June 2019 and last time they spoke. Second shop I've lost to crazy woman.
Anyway I'm thinking of eventually settling in a condo at Hilton Head or Bluffton area. Still trying to decide for sure though.

We moved here 10 yrs ago and I was told that this was our forever home. It's only 1400 sq ft and we only came from 1550 sq ft so it's not like we were ever living large.

I told the boss that the only way I am leaving here is in a body bag. I hate moving with a passion.

We moved twice in less than 2 years. And we have a lot of stuff. It was a real pain. The (2nd) move from Nevada to Oregon is almost 500 miles of mountainous roads with snow in the winter and heat in the summer. I was moving during the fires when I5 was closed and it was a 50 mile long traffic jam.

When the market crashed around 2014 I grabbed a small cheap house..750sqft. I was unemployed and still could afford to pay everything. Mortgage was only $400. I bought a Few acres of land last week as a camping getaway.

Went to the blinds store. Our apartment faces West, and we have some mean afternoon sun.

The wife wanted something called ‘cellular blinds’. I wanted them with motors, so I don’t have to walk around behind things on sunny days and lower the shades one at a time. So we ordered cellular blinds that are motorized to go up and down.

How much lazier can a man get? I am working on that; as an adventurous fellow, willing to push boundaries, I am seeking the ultimate in not getting up and doing stuff around the house.

The cellular blinds are great-you will like them. You get filtered light but can still see through them a bit.

I tinted my house windows with a good reflective ceramic tint. Made a huge difference

Thanks for confirming that.

It is always good to have someone who is not trying to sell you stuff tell you how things actually are.

Might want to check out solar screens. We have them on our west facing sunroom doors. Cuts down the best/light by a significant amount but you can still see out.

Did you talk to a lawyer about this?

engatwork 09-06-2020 05:12 PM

Yep, talked to about 6 lawyers and 2 judges. Sis could sign back over if she would but she does not communicate with mom anymore without going thru a lawyer. Nothing can be done about the warranty deed, payment upon death. Sis threatened to sue mom for selling timber off the land which mom has already done so we will see what happens with that. Sis and hubby live about an hour away and have not done a damn thing to help or assist mom except try their best to take everything moms got. Sis has not worked in about 10 years so I guess she had to come up with something. It will be interesting to see her sue her mom in mom's hometown. Mom is 89, sis is 66.
