Mercedes T80 World Land Speed Car

I have seen this over the years and thought it was cool:
https://emercedesbenz.com/autos/mercedes-benz/classic/mercedes-benz-t80-world-record-project-car/
https://www.mercedes-benz.com/en/classic/history/t-80-record-giant-from-1939/
Lots of sites on it if interested.

That thing looks sketchy as hell. Bet it was as sight to behold at speed.

Never moved under it's own power. The engine was removed and returned to be used in an aircraft. Maybe they will finish it

I think it looks marvelous.

What looks sketchy to you David?

The wings used for downforce may be the earliest example of downforce producing aero stuff. Jim Hall always seems to get credit for being first with that stuff.

Heck, MB used an air brake on their 300SL sports racer in 1954. https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.grandprixhistory.org%2Fmille_merc300.htm&psig=AOvVaw2iXY2tY6kkKThuTolvVw55&ust=1609778980606000&source=images&cd=vfe&ved=2ahUKEwil4duTnIDuAhVDgE4HHY9FDyAQr4kDegUIARC5AQ

Hall's tall wing about 1966 articulated so it gave downforce during acceleration, cornering and braking. On the straight away the wing went to a neutral position, activated by the driver's left foot. Left alone it defaulted to maximum downforce position.
