Results of towing a Jeep in 1st gear and trans in Low.
Yeah ... not pretty.

You can see the valves in the cylinder. Ouch!

My dad flat-towed his 356 from Ohio to GA a long time ago. The family was moving.
when we got to GA, we found that the 356 was in 4th gear the whole time. The engine was intact, but if it didn't need a rebuild before, it sure needed one then. (car had some rust, and was that one project that many dads have, but never quite get to...) This was in the 90's, before the 'air cooled Porsche' bubble started growing... -Not going to inherit a 356

My dad once towed our Mercury station wagon behind the school bus he'd made into an RV. He disconnected the drive shaft at the differential. We were moving and the wagon was crammed with our clothes. Plus he didn't want to sell it. It had an automatic, I gather that towing even in neutral is not a good idea.
Not checking the gear shift before taking off would perhaps be at the opposite end of that sort of caution.

I have made some incredibly boneheaded mistakes myself, I hate to admit.
There are a few I don’t even want to talk about, they were so stupid.

towed in gear 2.0
This reminds me of something we saw on SB 101 below King City, California. Someone had a freshly restored canary yellow 1954 Ford sedan on a dolly with the rear wheels down.
Gasoline vapor was chuffing out of the exhaust pipe, and this car was being towed about 50-55 MPH. I can only imagine what the cylinder walls looked like when the owner finally realized what he did.

When we go to Florida, I see people towing cars all the time. “Put that on a four wheel trailer, you idiot”, I scream to myself. (I don’t say it out loud because it annoys my wife and folks down South have guns.)

Do you ride in your car or a railroad car?
