iPhone 12 mini. Any reviews?

I really like my first gen iPhone SE. The size is perfect for me. I have gotten my money’s worth with it but it looks like it might go south before long. The second generation SE is much bigger. About as big as a 6S or a 7. I mean WTF?

The mini is really close to the same size as the 1st gen, and has a bigger screen in part because there is no hard home button. My first smart phone was an HTC, I think that’s right, I know it wasn’t a THC. I took it back within the partial refund period with T-Mobile and got the iPhone 5S. I could not get used to the HTC’s double tap to wake it up, plus it was huge, just too big for me. The 12 mini also does not have a dedicated home button. You swipe up, I think that’s how it works. I did it briefly on one at Costco.

I don’t know, I am wary. Does anybody have it?

Sorry. I have not crossed over to the dark side. I'm looking at a Oneplus 7 Pro. The Pixel 4xl is a posibility but it does not have a biometric reader that I have become rather fond of with my 2.5 yr old Moto G6.

If you like the SE, I just got a 2nd gen SE. much cheaper, has the same chip as the 11 but the form of the 8. Unless you really care about the selfie camera or need the absolute best screen, they’re all pretty similar, especially when you consider the price difference. Right now they’re free on Tmobile if you add a line but even if you don’t they only list for 400.

I read that the new SE is an advanced phone. What I read was that its size shape is indentical to the 7 but it's a better phone than the 7. What kills me is they made it bigger. That was the big deal with the SE I thought. They sized it like the 5s in response to popular demand. And perhaps they subsequently went with the mini because people howled about wanting a new version of the original SE, at the same size. Or maybe they had the mini in devolment and wanted a lure for it. Who knows, no need to research it like crazy, the end result will be the same.

iPhone SE (2nd gen)

Height: 5.45"
Width: 2.65"
Depth: 0.29"
Weight: 5.22 ounces
Retail price: $399

iPhone 12 Mini

Height: 5.18"
Width: 2.53"
Depth: 0.29"
Weight: 4.76 ounces
Retail price: $699

To me, the differences in size and weight are immaterial. If you need a better camera than what is found on the SE, get the 12 Mini. If the camera on your older SE was just fine, and you want to hang on to the home button, get the new SE.

Note the retail price differences, BTW...

I’m with you in size, Mac. I liked the size of the older phones. Shirt pocket or bib overalls size. My seven is just wide enough to not easily slide into some shirt pockets. I can’t button any shirt with phone in the pocket. Photo is def secondary.

What gives me pause with me iPhones is the charging station. Induction looks cool but who wants to carry the clunky thing in the car? And they cost 5x.

Unfortunately for me, other cellphones’ software seem half-way designed and often counter-intuitive. My brothers have Samsungs I think and they say I’m full of crap, not really a significant discovery. It’s kind of funny that they hate on Apple anything so passionately. The fact is I’ve worked in Unix (Data General), C/PM, PC-Dos, and Windows, from 3.1.1. Yet I’ve always owned Macs for personal use. Same with cellphones. Yet my favorite cellphone ever was an Ericsson slide phone. It was a phone. Period. Eventually I got an iPhone when the Ericsson became totally obsolete and I know I was going to have to learn a smartphone. I knew from experience that Apple designs with the buyer’s intuition as the guide so I went with iPhone.

If you get the SE please post a review. My 7 is approaching obsolescence.

Here are the dimensions of the 6s:

5.44" - ht.
2.64" - w.
.28" - d.

IOW, almost the same as the SE 2nd gen.

From just comparing the numbers of the Mini and the SE (2nd) doesn't look like that much difference but I got the SE precisely because I thought my 6s was too big. I like to keep my phone in my front pocket. I only buy shirts with two pockets - I keep my wallet on the left.

I still have the 6s, still works, it's my emergency back up. I put it in my pocket the other day. Yup, still too big. If it's all that was available, of course I would go for it. But the 6s fell out of my pocket much easier than my previous 5s and the subsequent 1st gen SE. That one was 4.87 h, 2.31 w. Smaller than than the 12 mini, but that's the only one that comes close.

But the home button is an issue. Not sure what I'll do.

Around Christmas I bought a refurb iPhone XR. Was pretty much opposed because I wanted to stick with a smaller phone like my now replaced iPhone 6. However I have not found that the slightly larger XR creates any problem. It fits in my shirt pocket OK and the swipe up instead of a button is fine.

The iPhone X was the cat's meow back when it came out and I do not think much has changed even though the 11 and 12 and soon 13 are available. Do not plan on changing anytime soon. Paid $330 for it from Supplytronics.com and bought the refurb iPhone6 from BackMarket.com. Both worked out fine.

I had heard about Ericsson phones for years but never saw one. Then one day, I think it was '09 or '10, I popped into Radio Shack for something, a guy was demo-ing the Sony Ericsson TM506. He was showing that you could use it to tether your computer to the web. I liked the phone, everything about it seemed cool to me, the buttons, the size (small), the whole package.

I found out later that if you got the phone through T mobile (my carrier), it had a chip or something to prevent free tethering - you had to pay an extra $20 or so a month for it. But the Radio Shack model was not subject to that - was "unlocked." Had a plenty good camera. I liked it a lot, wore out 2 of them. Then a T Mobile telephone saleslady told me I could get a smart phone for less than I was paying for my plan at the time. It was worth the upgrade. While the TM506 tethered fairly well, actually using the web on the phone was really limited.

I realize now that I was comparing the size of the mini my to 1st gen SE with the otterbox inner case still attached. SE-1 is 5/16ths shorter than the mini, which is about 1/4 shorter than than the SE-2. The Otter box case made it look closer to the Mini than it actually is. This also informs us that the SE-1 is about 9/16ths shorter than the SE-2, not a trivial amount.

Another odd thing about the mini is the notched screen. It goes around the camera lens, or something. I understand that most all the apps needed to be updated to accomodate that, not sure if that is completed enough for the average user. I'm plenty happy with the SE-1 camera so that's not an issue. The mini camera doesn't have a dedicated zoom feature, not a huge issue for me though it sometimes comes in handy.

OTOH, just read that the mini has the A14 processor which is faster and more efficient (longer battery life) than the SE-2's A13. The mini battery is smaller so it might be a wash. Also, the mini supports 5G while the SE doesn't. Not sure about the significance of all of this. I will be happy to be set straight as I am often in need of that.

When I replace my iPhone I wait until a new one comes out and wait until the prior generation one drops its price.

I basically only use it for calls and texts and some light surfing while I’m out, so I don’t need the latest and greatest.

I think maybe the answer he’s looking for: “in the marketplace."

I gave the numbers a looksee yesterday, the 12 mini With T-Mobile would cost me $30.42 a month for 24 months, $13.75 a month more than the SE, which would be $16.67 a month. The totals are $730 for the mini, $400 for the SE. It’s sort of a tough call for me. Do I want to pay that premium for better speed in a smaller package? Maybe. I’ll need to try the swipe up thing to wake the phone a little more before I decide.

tyl604 03-26-2021 08:29 PM

Swipe up actually works OK; do not miss the button. Do like the fact that I can call on Siri without having even to touch the phone - no button, no swipe up, nothing. I can just say for instance Siri sent a text to XXX and it works. Do not miss the button.
