Auto Shop delivers 91,500 greasy pennies.
|
Yea I just saw that on TV. Pretty crappy stunt. Hope no one uses his shop again. Did you notice the flat tires on the wheelbarrow? $900 worth of pennies must be pretty heavy.
|
The guy is not legally required to accept payment in pennies dumped in his driveway. The business owner just fukt himself with that stunt. This is about to get a lot more expensive for them.

I'm paywalled out of the NYT at present, found the story on Fortune. The owner sounds like a dick all right.

I do not remember what dealer my dad worked for at the time but according to my dad he got paid in silver dollars. I think this was back in the 50's or so. I still have a 1884 Morgan that he saved. I

What laws are at play regarding the denomination of cash/coin payment?
|
I'm not sure any laws were broken; it appears both parties had a dispute and the auto shop wanted to punish him.

One of the main reasons I began learning and reading up on how to work on the cars was due to the following:
1. Extremely poor service/attitudes from auto repair shops. 2. Repairs were not made properly causing me to spend yet more time and money to get the job done correctly. I've spent around $10,000 over the past 20 years with auto repair shops who failed to make the proper repairs. 3. When asked to take accountability, the shop owners copped a plea. ANY business can handle normal day to day business operations fairly well. It is when an unusual situation arises that you find out EXACTLY what type of people you are dealing with......... I don't try and steer anyone away from these shops either; I've learned the average mercedes owner needs to get a good dose of abuse THEMSELVES before any changes occur.......this means I don't make negative comments about the businesses on yelp.com, file complaints with the BBB, or make posts on facebook or trust pilot either. |
I am skeptical of taking my vehicles anywhere to have service or maint so I do it my self. Plus I enjoy it (most of the time) If something really major goes wrong I will probably have to use someone.
|
What I can do myself, I do myself. For things I cannot, I have a shop I have been using for years with out issue. They have always done what they said they would. They stand behind their work and they always charge a reasonable price.

If you have an auto repair shop you know and trust, pray to the stars they stay in business. IMHO, it is becoming increasingly more difficult to find any auto repair shop that:
1. Knows and understands what they are doing. 2. Has a good attitude and treats their customers well. |

I did have a friend in college who paid his tuition in $1.00 bills. This was in the early 80's. So, manual counting. I asked why not pennies? $1 bills have written on them 'Legal for all Debt public and private'. |
law or no law it is unfortunate the shop chose to handle it this way. I know I won't be sending them any business anytime soon.......

I'd think the shop could be criminally liable for dumping the oil, even if coating coins.
