It’s just a little unnerving when these huge flies bump into you. It’s one thing to have a small fly hit you, but one the length of a tennis ball really makes me quiver after it runs into me.

The cicada-killing wasps will show up and have a feast. Anyone who's afraid of bees (like me) will be terrified by these things. They live in the ground and favor sunny, southwestern facing slopes, usually near a tree line (exactly like my backyard). They're quite large and are very adept at air-to-air combat. It's actually amazing to see them kill cicada's in flight and return to their nests. Golf course greenskeepers hate them as they can do significant damage. The good news is they generally leave people alone. I'll stop mowing the slope in my yard at the first sign of them and I'll probably water the area heavily everyday since the like it very dry.

whats sad is in 2000, there were plenty of Bee's. Now not one Honey, Bumble, or Carpenter Bee in my yard.

Wow. I didn't realize they were that large. Search says from .75 to 2.25 inches long. The only thing I recall in that realm from my youth were Junebugs and they are smaller, about an inch long at most. Some guys would catch them and tie a thread to their leg and use it as a toy.

Very noticeable in many parts of North America. Actually serious if the decline continues. Examples that man has to become far more careful are everywhere.

cicadas, in san antone we called them locust. Loved hearing them every summer.
Learned to shoot good from my grandpa, taught me how to hit them way up in the pecan tree. Got marksman badge in the air force

No big deal. It's annoying and fascinating at the same time. The noise doesn't stop for awhile.
I'll date myself here, but last time it happened I was in high school. I clearly remember a few seniors brought a refrigerator box full of them into the school and tipped it over in the upstairs locker commons (in the center of the building). It was a hilarious nightmare.

I believe real locust are a bit different and very destructive. Last big hatch I remember being on Penn's Creek. That is why I posted I have a fly for that. Actually, two. Some of the ground was like peg board. They were bunched in the trees. I didn't catch any trout on the flies. So, 17 years later? I thought someone would have posted about their red eyes. Maybe from Mars.
