Which car should I buy?
I am thinking about buying a third car as a fun car. I only want to spend about 15,000 and don't know a ton about cars? I was thinking a 1985 380 SL

Don't know much about cars... but you are willing to shell out $15k easily. Hmmmm... sounds like a scam artists dream

I love the R107. If you are getting a 380SL make sure it's an 83+ (or is it 84+?) that has the double row timing chain or if it's the earlier 380SL make sure it's been converted.
I do prefer the W126 Coupe

IMO a "fun" car should be a stick, is it easy to get an r107 w/stick?
here is a really good thread on a similar topic (slightly lower budget): http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?threadid=29829&highlight=porsche+914 |

$15,000 is almost 560SL money. I would take a look at an '86 560SL and see if you could get into one for that much in good shape.
Second choice? Look at a 1977-79 450SL that's in great shape. You can find a good one for around $10K and spend the extra $5K on rims, stereo upgrades, future incidental repairs, etc. The 560SL has 240 hp, the 380SL has 155 hp, and the 450SL has 180 hp. Also, the 450 has the super-durable iron block 4.5 liter V-8. That might be a consideration right there. -Sam |

Yep, 15k is 560SL territory.
According to Frank Barrett's The Illustrated Guide to Mercedes, the best SL's are the 560's, then the 450's, and last the 380's (least horsepower).

Hhhhhmmmmm, you have $15K and want a fun Mercedes?
Id have to agree with some of the others that a late 1970s 450SL would be a great choice. You can get a nice one cheaper, but keep the $$$ for repairs. |

ColumbusMick,
Hi. Come to the All German Car Show on Sunday, Aug. 4th and talk with some owners of "fun" cars. As far as fun MB cars, I think the 450SL is a great choice. Go for the first year produced for minimum emissions control (less complex), or the last year for most refinement of systems (bugs worked out). You can get a real good one for $12,000 and then you have cash for maintenance (valves, exhaust, climate control, transmission, shocks, etc.)

The 450 is the oldest though?

I would go for a w126 in that price range but out of the 4.5 3.8 and 5.6 I preffer the 5.6
I think for a fun car I would want a truck or a 5 speed M3 or M5. |

I agree if the sort of fun is racing fun, I'd find a stick shift. Preferably an M3/M5 or the Mercedes 190E 2.3-16
