Here’s your chance to get your hands on 1 of 25 ultra-rare Mercs made!

... provided you’ve got deep pockets! This Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR Strassenversion ('road version' in German), was produced in the late 90's to comply with racing regulations that required them to make a set number of road-going variants. It's so rare that only 25 were built-- 20 as coupes and only 5 as roadsters. This exact one going up for auction is 9/25.

Gooding & Company predicts it'll go for between $8.5 and $10 million. What do you think it'll sell at?

Sure.... why not. I'll buy one ... let me see if I can sell the kidneys of a few dozen people.

I dunno .... when MB does a performance coupe they usually put a big star in the grill not a W126 style hood ornament :)

Wait, you mean this isn’t a Pelican Parts raffle?

P.C. 07-30-2021 12:56 PM

Meh.

cmac2012 07-31-2021 12:01 AM

I would spend that sort of money on something else to be certain, however, even though the styling is a bit odd, that thing would be a rocket ship. A 6.9 L V 12, what, 600 hp?

A couple of years ago there used to be one on display in the "show room" of this small Euro mechanic on Sepulveda and the 405fw on/off ramp. Always thought it was a weird spot for a million dollar super car. I remember no one wanted these cars, beside the high cost they were considered to be lemons by some.

Wow. That would qualify for some serious “buyers remorse.” I’m a little amazed at people always wanting more, more, more. I mean who the hell needs a Dodge (insert diabolical name here) with 700+ horsepower?

Plenty of other examples of ego out of control vehicles in the world. One has to admire the engineering talents of Christian von Koenigsegg. Just the cam-less engine breakthrough is remarkable, not to mention many other interesting bits and pieces on his cars. But I have to note they are impractical as hell. Very little room to carry anything but next time you need to go 200 mph +, that’s the car you want.

(The normal quote function wouldn’t work for me on this post. Oh well)

Those cars would fly... literally...

Actually, this was the successor to the CLK GTR

Not really a surprise I guess, but the video of those cars taking off looks a lot like that of the unlimited hydroplanes taking off of Lake Washington. The nose lifting up sort of slow motion and the whole thing tumbling through the air, really similar.

Might want to be ready to turn the volume down:

The quote function not working well today.

After the second vid just above, I was somehow led to this video of the improbable race at the ‘65 Le Mans, In which the Ford and Ferrari factory teams failed the endurance part of the race leaving an independently mounted North American entry of a Ferrari 250LM piloted in part by the great Jochen Rindt to go onto victory. I had read about the story before, but never in depth such as provided by this video. I didn’t realize that it was the last time that a Ferrari was victorious at Le Mans.
