"Despite its new EPA rating, Lucid has not yet delivered any of the vehicles. The Air Dream Edition lists for $169,500 ." My 535i's cost less than half that new, and it's now worth about one tenth of that, and already gets 500 miles out of a tank of gasoline on the interstate.

That is progress, though.

There was some Karen on a BMW board saying the gooberment(s) should ban gasoline-powered implements of destruction (lawn mowers, string trimmers, edges, hedge clippers, and (my personal favorite) leaf blowers). His main reason for this is that he has a new born, and when the landscapers are working next door it wakes the kid up.

They are looking to fill that S500 type space. Niche market and not affordable to the majority of the USA

I also am not fond of the gasoline powered brooms, but holy Shiite Batpeople they get the job done in a hurry. This I know because a client gave me an electric leaf blower - it is way quicker than your standard corn broom, especially if the concrete is the pebbly-surface type. I could see that connecting and running long extension cords would really slow you down. And that would translate into higher gardener bills.

Back when I owned my own home in the suburbs and was young and watching dollars, I did the outside lawn work (which I stopped doing in 1992). In early spring, it became ‘small engine day’ on our road, as everyone broke out their lawn mowers, trimmers, and blowers.

The air turned blue, and had sort of an ICE pre-EPA scent to it. My mower was a 4 stroke, but there were lots of two strokes around too.

My battery mower and battery string trimmer are great...plenty of power, and I use only about 25% battery per mow. If you are buying a push mower, at this point there is hardly any reason to buy gasoline powered units.

My mower was a self propelled one, do you really need to push your mower, or is that just a term?

Growing up, we had a 2-stroke Jacobesn mower. It was about my age, and I used to to cut a few lawns in the neighborhood. To keep the smoke out of the user's face, the exhaust went down into the deck and then out through the discharge chute. When it died it died cool, with a huge plume of smoke coming out of the grass discharge chute. It looked like this, but had a 1950's looking cowl over the engine and gas tank.

https://youtu.be/rpOEwinbn0s

I had a Ryobe 4-stroke string trimmer, circa 1997, that started smoking after just a few years. I replaced it with a commercial-grade Honda that's going strong after 21 years (and two carburetors, and a clogged spark arrestor).

California's small engine emissions tests require compliance after 250 hours. It took me 18 years to put 150 hours on a B&S lawnmower. My Honda trimmer only has 60 hours after 21 years. The life-limiting factor on my stuff is usually spare parts no longer being available. It was close call with the carburetor on the Honda a few years ago.

Fresh non-ethanol gas and synthetic oil do wonders for small engines.

There's a hot mommy in Bubba Estates who rides around on a gasoline-powered golf cart that's running way rich. I can smell it when she drives by, and it puts out a cloud of black smoke when she accelerates.

When I was working, my tasks would take one to two years to complete. That can drive somebody crazy. Mowing the grass is something that provides a sense of accomplishment after just an hour's work.

Post Leaf Blowers & Lawn Mowers

Wow ~ a Jacobson rotary mower .

In 196? (2, 30 or 4) Mom bought a reel typ Jacobson, back then lead free gasoline was tricky to find and regular leaded would form pellet between the spark plug's electrode, easy to fix but always a bother .

The leaf blowers, I hate them, too noisy and most just blow a HUGE cloud of dust and leaves into the street and their neighbor's yard and freshly washed car....

I bought an electric one but have never taken it out of the box .

I live on a corner lot and so have two sidewalks and gutters to sweep, I use a wide very soft bristle push broom, it works fine on pebbled surfaces and asphalt .

Interesting thread, kinda off topic but good I think .

A term. The battery mower is also self propelled although it is also light enough that I only use it up a steep incline in our yard. On flat ground, it is a breeze without the motor assist.

My daughter was very athletic, so between her practices and her games on the weekends, and considering rain, I often found myself mowing half a lawn after a full days work, and doing the other half the next day.

“Eff this *****” I told myself, I’m out of the house nearly 12 hours a day with working and commuting, I don’t plan on coming home to mowing, or to missing the kid’s games on weekends.

So I put lawn maintenance into the budget, gave my mower to my brother-in-law, and washed my hands of the whole thing. No mowing, no clean ups, no raking, just handing over some dollars.

Worked for me.

Work was 12 miles from our house, and we were on flex-time. Sometimes, I'd blow off a weekday morning and do the grass before it got too hot here in the swamp.

With Frau Putzer at work and her car gone, I could keep my car in the garage (in Frau Putzer's X3's spot) and still get my gasoline powered implements of destruction in and out of our current cramped garage. I don't want my car outside while I'm cutting grass.

Our garage has room for two cars, barely, one being backed in. There's only room to get to the driver's doors and trunk/hatch on each, and the left rear door on the X3 (barely). But, every other piece of wall in the garage has crap stacked against it.

I cut the grass this afternoon before we went to dinner. When I did my early morning Hardee's biscuit run, I moved all the gasoline powered implements of destruction (four of them) from the garage to the house's front entrance. I was running late, so the implements of destruction replaced the X3 in the garage while we went to dinner. After coming home, I had to pull my car out to put them all back in their places. ... what a PIA.

Our next house will have a separate tool room for outside stuff, with it's own overhead door (a 6' wide "golf-cart" door). There's also be a smaller automotive tool room. The new garage will be almost clutter-free, just cars, two work benches, a sink (in a nook) and a roll-away garbage can. There'll also be at least 4' between cars (even Suburbans or Range Rovers) and between the cars and the side walls of the garage. So, I'm calling the new garage the "automobile gallery."

The garage is really the main entrance to a house, and my main entrance is so cluttered than I'm frustrated every time I come home. When we go somewhere together, I pull the car out and Frau Putzer has to get in and out of the car in the driveway.

Have you ever noticed when you're looking at a house for sale, the garages don't have any cars in them? That's a real estate agent trick, because most garages aren't big enough to hold the number of cars that they've advertised them to hold. A lot of the current owners' normal garage crap has also been moved to a u-stor-it shed somewhere.

I'm so looking forward to being able to scoot in between the cars on my mechanic's stool to apply wax and manually check and adjust tire pressures... inside the garage. If I want, I can wax cars and check tire pressures naked. Doing that now, in the driveway, would cause a lot of problems.

They're taking on a company that's been around over 100 years, and one that's not likely to go belly-up any time soon. Tesla's achieved critical mass because they got going early. But, the other electric vehicle companies (Fisker, Nicola, Lordstown, etc.) probably won't be around long once the big boys get in the electric car business.

We went another way.

We sold our house and moved to a condo, and now we don’t need to do anything outside. We have a one car garage and one floor living in a four story elevator building.

Maybe, maybe not. It's too soon to tell who will win the race. The only reason Ford is able to remain in business today is that they can buy emissions credits from Tesla. That's what allows them to put their knuckle dragging F150's on the road. This is the same stupid mistake the majors made in 1972...building gas guzzling monsters when the world was about to pivot to econoboxes. In 1971, the roads were populated by the big three, and only hippies and oddballs drove foreign cars. By 1975, everyone wanted a Japanese car. The majors tried to respond, but when was the last time you saw a Pinto, Vega or Cricket on the road? A vast swath of the auto market left and never came back.

As for lawn appliances, most of the towns up here in suburban NY are working on banning gas leaf blowers. They're already illegal in some places.Battery tools work just as well, and swapping batteries is faster, neater and cleaner than messing with gas cans. Eleectrics are clean and quiet.
