Tragic. Either a ****ing drunk or a "Geisterfahrer". That kind of thing is commonplace now here in Phoenix. Real tragedy, with the only upside being that none of the kids were killed.

Perhaps even better signage on the interchanges? It a lot of those cases actual impairment is not a factor. Especially on the ones where the enterance and exit from the highway are right beside each other.

A school a classmate hit a minister and killed him it that fashion. Ministers fault at night and he did not have his headlights on. I wondered if intentional suicide at the time. It occurred near his city so non familiarity with the roads was not a factor. Minister may have been intoxicated.

There was a resulting coroners investigation. Never heard any more.

What you said about the entrance and exits right beside each other struck a chord. You see this set up all the time and it IS worrisome.

You are more likely to get creamed on a surface road with in a few miles of your home.

Dont' know what you mean by entrances and exists near each other. Around here there is no way you can make that mistake unless you are drunk or otherwise drugged or do it on purpose.

And it is an increasingly common occurrance around here. Phoenix has a rapidly increasing proportion of dumbasses on the roads. It's become noticably worse in the last five years.

It is said the well known singer/entertainer, Johnny Cash knew every road, street and highway in the United States. Believe me, there are more than a few entrances/exits on interstate highways that follow right next to each other for a distance before making the split.

We have a few freeway entrance roads that are two way till you get to the entrance and you have to go left to enter the freeway but there is oncoming traffic that has a stop sign. They can keep coming but their side is one way... I can easily see how someone could miss the entrance and end up going the wrong way on a one way.

Then there were the suicide lanes in Tucson. The center lane would change directions during rush hour. The rest of the day it is a regular turn lane. When the snow birds came down it was game on.

I stayed away from them during winter.

Part of the problem may be. Actual driving ability required may have increased. Yet the requirements to pass a drivers test have not. Speed kills and traffic moves ever faster in general.

Germany is very demanding to qualify for a drivers license in comparison to north America I believe.

I like to believe I have a social responsibility. I would like to see a retest every year of old goat drivers like me. I have informed my family that if they notice any deterioration in my driving to bring it up with me. I have no wish to kill or injure anyone. I watch for it myself yet for one to assume their cognitive self awareness is still intact does not seem reasonable to me.

Driving for almost 64 years without experiencing an accident in my case means nothing. Never being at the wrong place at the right time was just good coincidence.

Never got a ticket for any infraction either. I have talked my way out of them in a few cases though. Or just landed up with a warning. I have driven a lot over the years and still do.

I feel my night vision is not as good anymore. The last eye examination informed me cataracts are just starting. Too early to operate. So have minumised long night drives. Plus if the weather looks bad for snow or whatever. Just no longer go.

Driving is one of the freedoms we as individuals have. Giving it up at some point is not an option to me. I know I will miss it. Besides the real practicality.

True both statistically and in reality. Can be hard service for cars if far too many very short trips. You of course are far more likely to experience personal accidents locally. I would guess most people accumulate ninety percent of driving time if not millage locally as well.

Cars are becoming more expensive I think. The extended oil change services are not meant for a high percentage of short runs.

Even ethical new car dealers tell customers. Car qualifies as being in hard service. Oil should be changed more frequently than is done on average. It is really cheap in the overall scheme of things today. Leave the oid oil filter in between changes.

With a Vacuum oil extractor it is nothing to do at low cost.

I change the oil every 6 months or 5k. I have yet to come close to 5k.

No surprise this thread began by our most famous agitator .

I looked at a report from the New Mexico Highway Patrol and it scared me ~ a large percentage of drivers after sunset are alcohol impaired .

There's a socioeconomic angle there too, I ass-U-me it's obvious .

I no longer enjoy night driving , I used to while away the pre dawn hours of insomnia driving around the older sections of town .
