New lady sprinter - wow

Abby Steiner.

Amazing speed on this lady. Her start wasn’t that good but her high gear is incredible:

If she improves on her start, could be heading towards Usain Bolt territory.

As they mentioned, she was running into a headwind in the 200, And when adjusted for the wind her time would’ve been 21.66. Way faster than I ever ran and I wasn’t exactly slow.

Our best sprinter at my high school ran the 220 yards (About a meter less than 200 m) in 21.3 and that guy was like a God.

I was impressed with her ability to make up that distance and end up winning by a decent margin. That takes some serious speed.

If she gets a start developed that’s about as good as the lady to the left of her she could be the next big thing. Hard to imagine she could not improve on that. Obviously her legs are pretty strong, she’s got the fast twitch thing going on.

But yeah, to go that much faster in the last 50 yards is really remarkable.

Exactly.

We have a lot of talented runners in the family. Next week my G granddaughter will high jump at the state meet, my three W grandsons will all compete at the state in pole vault.

The twin grandsons are 8th graders and their older brother is a Sophomore. The twins were not allowed by school policy to compete in pv during the season, so they picked up poles with zero practices and qualified for state on Saturday.

Their father my son holds the school record for pv since 1996.

I was slow but enjoyed competing even though in four years only scored two points for the team.

The oldest daughter was a very strong distance runner. Running for Carmel the team won state three times in her stay there and nationals once. She also finished in the top ten zt state in the 1600 as a junior.

Wow, three pole vaulting prodigies in the same family.

I never tried pole vaulting, it’s one of those higher tech events. After the ‘72 Olympics, some buddies and I set up a high jump pit with two boxsprings and two mattresses. We wanted to try high jumping flop style. I managed 5’6” which is pretty mediocre, but it felt neat since that’s just a little bit shorter than I am tall. When I was in grade school in New Mexico, most all the playgrounds had a tetherball pole or several, a game I liked and got pretty good at. Seems you hardly ever see that anymore. Also there was usually a high jump pit. At that age, we all did the scissor and nothing else. I recall jumping just over 4 feet in the sixth grade. The landing pit was sand. If you flopped into that you could easily break your neck. But that was in 1964 or so, Fosbury made his big splash in 1968. The high jump was never the same again.

Ironically, he developed that as a sort of evolution of the scissor. When he first started jumping, he could not do the western roll higher than he could do the scissor so he stuck with the latter and it evolved gradually.

pole vaulting is not for the faint of heart! i tried it once.....one attempt in fifth grade and knew it was not for me. If you are unlucky in a turn you can land on your head....in the metal placement box! My son did that once and was lucky to land so his shoulders kept his head above the metal.

He also broke two fiberglass poles. I was lucky not to see it. No harm but a couple years later a vaulter from his school broke a pole and lost one of his testicals.

Holy crap. I guess that fiberglass pole when it whips back straight is going to go where it wants to go. I was never drawn to do it. I guess one would need the interest and tutelage of an experienced vaulter to get started.

On a lighter note, check out the shoulders on Ms. Steiner. Oh man, I love toned and sexy arms on a woman.
