Any original mini fans out there?

I have been thinking of using one to tow behind my motor home. Wondering about AC....any out there with it?

Is there a Mini forum worth its salt?

Are you talking about the original BMC Mini or the BMW one ? .

Both have their fans .

The early one. The new one is too heavy for my purpose.

Post BMC Minis

They were in production to 2013 IIRC and the later ones were fuel injected and had real roll up windows, still BMC products so maybe some quality issues .

For a while they were being direct imported by hipsters, they weren't DOT legal in any way but seemed to be good cars .

A young rich guy I knew bought one and swapped a Honda engine into it, *much* faster but he didn't keep the car after he finished it .

Beware of random or bogus V.I.N.'s ! .

Once it's past 25 years old in Ca. at least you can title and register them .

My brother in law had one back in the eighties. He had a Cooper S with a lot of the David Broussard mods. It was a hoot to drive. I got my hand at it several times. Modern vehicles have eclipsed it though.

Its cartoonishly small and equally hopeless in mechanical too. The tiny wheels make it ride like a shopping cart, small potholes feel like craters.

There are some classic minis available with AC but they tend to be the Rover models from the late 80's to early 2000's. Try https://www.minimania.com/ for some that are for sale. You will probably have to check with the sellers to see which have AC. Most will be RHD. Be prepared to spend 25-30K. There is a site called SuperCooper that will build one to your spec with a Honda engine (160HP) for about 100K.

Post Some Ideas.....

I'd think you should go test drive one or maybe rent one for a week and see how you like the ergonomics above all else .

Some will simply hate it just because .

I think they're too small (even though I love small cars), I know some who love theirs though so give it a try, you may be surprised or turned away .

The same thing with the modern FIAT 500's ~ they litter the junkyards, mostly filthy and obviously poorly maintained .

Yet I often see the very limited "1957" model zooming about, always sparkly clean and no dents, smoke etc. so maybe.......

Yesterday at the autocross a guy showed up with a nice looking black early mini with rhd. He got about 50' on course before it started cutting off. He took it back to the paddock (at least it is light and easy to push) and got it running fine until he tried racing again. It died in the same place on course.

One of the guys with a new mini gave him a ride so he got in a few runs.

Post Vintage Tin

AC can be added, I don't think it wise but it depends on your planned usage : tootling 'round town in no hurry you're good to go .

Not so much if you want to go fast .

The later BMC Minis had fuel injection and this is a very good thing indeed .

I had the entire 1275 engine and F.I. setup with harness etc., etc. but I didn't need it and no one wanted it for free so in the scrap bin it all went, a shame IMO .

Question

What's sad Tom ? .

I've had to scrap so much good vintage tin it makes my head spin .

Looks like my 1984 300CD will be next, I get no one willing to come look at it and it needs to go .

Sad because I've put over $16,000.00 worth of parts in it yet it's still just another cool old car that needs paint and has dead A/C........

The '59 Metropolitan Nash FHC is going soon too .
