Drinking and Road Raging.......
I just read a book regarding DUIs....the author says if you have had even ONE drink you should wait 12 hours before getting behind the wheel. Alcohol can do whacky things to people's emotions and this case proves it. Plus, she had a history of driving in excess of the posted speed limit.....

Tragic and interesting story. It’s remarkable the way peoples’ egos, their feeling of personal power can get really attached to the speed and acceleration of their fine automobile. And it makes eminent sense that people can become more volatile behind the wheel with the addition of alcohol.
And in no way do I want to place any blame on the mother, but I’m telling you, people are way too casual about walking into cross walks. It stuns me when I see people, even carrying small children, or pushing a baby stroller, walk out into the street with vehicles coming, and just behind those vehicles wide open spaces for a block or so. In other words, wait 5 to 10 seconds and the odds of being hit by a vehicle are much, much smaller. |
I totally agree that is best to wait, watch and listen BEFORE entering a cross walk. that said, every day of the week I witness moronic self-serving drivers run stop signs and red lights at the intersection. Also, notice in the OP, the driver was going TWICE the posted speed limit when she hit the boys. Most pedestrians base their decision to cross the street on driver's going the posted speed limit. I say we are now living in a day and age when pedestrians should count on drivers speeding like bats out of h*ll......
There is an innovative cross walk light close to where I live. When you are walking and wish to cross the street at the cross walk, you press a button on the traffic light pole then wait to hear the signal. A very loud sound "whoop whoop whoop whoop' emits along with a bright white "pedestrian in cross walk" sign LIGHTS UP to warn motorist to STOP. Even with all this, I've come close to getting run over several times by self-serving drivers who flat a** don't care about pedestrians...... |
Gave up alcohol 6 years ago , feel better , have more money to spend , live longer , all in all a better life . Watching all the advertised SuperBowl commercials I should be wearing an IV bag of beer to my veins to keep a smile .

Bud _DON'T_ Make You Wiser !
Such a tragedy .
Alcohol affects different humans differently . I simply won't drink if I'm going to drive home . Agreed that pedestrians need to WAKE THE HELL UP as I see red light & stop sign runners daily, few ever bother to look if any cross traffic is coming . |
I trigger road rage often, because I try to coast up to red traffic lights. I had two incidents last week: a school bus driver, and some Hausfrau in a Buick SUV.
Both of the people I offended pulled into the left lane, accelerated, passed me, got in front of me, and then had to romp on the brakes to stop in the back of the line of stopped cars. I came up right behind them a few seconds later. If I don't have to speed up before coming to a stop or catching the cars ahead of me if they start moving with a green light, I'm not impeding traffic. Using my hyper-mile-ing techniques, I get phenomenal MPG. My all-season tires last 60k+ miles, and my brakes last 120k+ miles. We went into town last night for dinner in the X3 (xDrive 30i), a 33-mile round trip. We got 36.9 MPG. I was at 37.1 MPG pulling into the driveway. But, I have to stop and let Frau Putzer out before pulling into our cramped garage. There's not enough room for front seat passengers to get in or out of our cars inside the garage. Our next house will have 4' 4" between an X3 centered in Bay #1 and the side wall of the garage, and 4' 5" between an X3 centered in Bay #1 and the drive-on lift in Bay #2. I'm going to paint a yellow line down the center of the bays, so we can use 3D Surround View to pull the BMW's in perfectly centered in the bays, sort of like those lines on airport ramps. As with our current garage, I'll also have a hanging wiffle ball. When it touches the windshield, centered above the center speaker in the dashboard, the car is where it's supposed to be. |
When I took that motorcycle safety class you need to take to get your license, the instructor told us a good rule of thumb is to not ride if you've had a drink in the last 24 hours!
|
Oboy ! I finally get to say "DO be a Putz" ! :D .
Anyway, you're dead right, I too coast long distances when I see stopped traffic ahead, no point in zooming up and slamming on the brakes . I've owned many manual tranny vehicles and I rarely ever need to replace the clutch no matter how many miles I work it . |

With those morons out on the road, the brake repair business is RECESSSION PROOF!! |

In addition, I do my best to be off the streets when the sun goes down...... |

One sector of the automotive industry which thrived during the 2008 meltdown was the replacement tire market. People were buying new tires instead of new cars. My old M3 had a 3.2-liter engine, 11.5:1 compression ratio, was about 800 pounds lighter than an X3, and a had manual transmission. I could come to just about a complete stop just with engine braking. Oh boy, did that piss people off. |

Not going to do that myself. I’ve seen too many wing nuts in traffic. |
I have totally stopped walking through that particular intersection. If I need to travel to businesses located out of the neighborhood, I pray to the protection gods that none of the psycho drivers hit me just before I hop in the 300D. I've also noticed that the REAL psychos seem to hit the roads between 4:00 PM and 7:00 PM. So....I try to be off the streets no later than 3:00 PM.....

No way I can hide from the world like that. Just got to be careful.
