Construction expert needed - Concrete retaining wall cost
 

Question for the experts. The city is replacing the street near my house so I asked the contractor to bid on redoing the retaining wall in front of my house which is currently done in railroad ties and coming apart.

As I have no idea what this stuff should cost, I figured I'd post here and get some thoughts.

The estimate reads:

130linear ft, 4.5 tall,3ft footing, 8 inches deep, #4 rebar
12 inches in the center, 4500PSI concrete $21,500

This includes removal of old wall drains every 10 ft and gravel behind the wall for drainage

What do ya'll think?

That you need multiple bids, using the spec provided by the first contractor...I assume that the contractor will dispose the remains of the original wall? Did your contractor provide a time of completion?

Yep, they're replacing the sidewalk in front of my house so this will be done at the same time and everything will be removed as part of the deal. The heavy equipment, 18 wheelers etc are all here and it will be done when the street is done.

The same company redid the alley behind my house and I had them replace my driveway. I'm not concerned in the least about them being able to complete the job completely. I just want to make sure that the price is fair.

If they already have the equipment onsite, they should be at a cost advantage to other bidders, assuming that they passed that advantage onto you...

It does not sound like a bad price to me. I'm not sure about your area but around here you are doing good if they show up:rolleyes:.

You're not kidding - my job involves monitoring of construction projects, and since Covid, contractors are not having a lot of fun finding and keeping good workers.

agreed.....also at a glance price seems ok. It would ba a lot cheaper to remove the wall you have and reduce the slope to one that can be mowed.

Sounds like it needs engineering and permits if it's taller than 4' but maybe that's included.
