New SL500...

What a neat place!

Picked up my first Mercedes product on Thursday. It's been a dream of mine for as long as I can remember to own a Mercedes SL.

University turned to Grad School, and then kids turned to expensive teens, and then more University bills.

Also, my career as an anthropologist didn't lend the take home pay required to float a loan for an SL.

Last year, we got a real shocker. My mother-in-law died. She had been a houskeeper to a rather wealthy family in England. When the lady-of-the-house died some years ago, she left a not-inconsiderable sum to my mother in law. Though the estate was split among a group of relatives, my wife and I ended up with enough money to do a few things we had never thought possible.

We gave some away, something I had always wished I could do. We paid off the mortgages of both our daughters homes, and created education trusts for our grandchildren.

Then my wife surprised me. She visited one of our Mercedes dealers, and found out the "new" SL500 would be available summer of 2002. She put a deposit on one (silver over black) and presented me with the order last Christmas. Wow? Wow!

Well, she's been mine for three days (the car, not my wife, she's been mine for 39 years) and am I impressed.

Quite a change from my 1991 Toyota Camry with 350,000 kilometers!

I noticed that there is a VERY long list of members. Is there any way to search by location? I live in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, and I am wondering if by chance there are any members within a reasonable distance of me?

I have been doing some "experimenting" with the site, and think I might be onto how to add a "signature" to my posts.

Talk about a LOT of Mercedes info! Incredible!

(The posts that talk about late model Mercedes products being shabby should sit in my car. I can't imagine how it could be of higher quality.)

But, sleep calls to me, so I must take my leave. I'm driving to Edmonton tomorrow to show my oldest daughter the car. Too bad that highway is so straight!

Congratulations on the car and welcome to Mercedesshop.

I am sure you will find plenty of stuff around here. I do not know of a way to search by location, but I am sure some of our Canadian members will chime in.

Congrats on your purchase and welcome!

I do agree with you! The local dealer had both the SL500 Silver Arrows Edition and the new SL500. The R129 still is nice in its own ways.. (old school interior, which I really like, etc.)

However the new SL was just breath-taking. Even my BMW loving buddies just fell in love with it. There's no substitute for it in the 'ultra-expensive coupe/roadster category'.

The interior is amazing especially the attention to detail! I love it. I wish I could buy one.... dream on Holson...

Well, so far so good. Made it to my daughter's place without getting a speeding ticket, which is very hard in this car!

I've never owned a "holy cow" kind of car before, and having people rubber-necking in traffic is a new thing for me. Lots of other Mercedes drivers giving me a thumbs-up sign.

One thing I hadn't really thought of, but this thing sure can use some fossil fuels. Mileage is much worse than my old Camry, but the Camry can't go nearly as quick as this car.

Luggage space? With the top down, it's pretty small in the trunk. With the top up, it's STILL pretty small!

One thing I have discovered is the best way to drive on a hot day. If you're on the highway, you don't need the top up. Put it down, put the side windows up, and crank up the AC.

Well, our adventure continues. We're in Edmonton until Thursday morning, and then it's off to Vancouver to visit our other "little girl." (She's 32!)

I noticed lots of people have posted pictures of their cars (and sometimes themselves!). I am going to tackle this when we get back to Calgary. My neighbour is a computer-geek and I'll get him to help me with it. Hope my five year old computer can handle the stress!

Omegabenz, thanks for the messages...

Small world!

blackmercedes:

It is a small world. My daughter lives in St. Albert! We're leaving for the coast in the morning, but we'll will be back in a few weeks. My youngest daughter is coming back with us, (not in the SL!) and we're having a set of family portraits done. First time in ages we'll have the lot of us in the same place.

My eldest is an attorney, practicing family law. She's home with her little ones, and works in the evenings by visiting clients in their homes.

I'll send you her tele #, and we'll get together soon.

Gilly (Dan! Such a great name!) and the rest: My two daughters (36 and 32) are MORE than enough. Had it not been for their extensive education (one lawyer, one engineer) I could have bought that SL years ago.

We've been able to test this car's AC! 37C here today in the late afternoon. I actually put the top up, and let the AC keep us cool. That hard top is one terrific feature.

I hope that the legendary Mercedes longevity applies to my car, as I'm having too much to stop driving!
