What a cool car!
last night my wife and I took the kids out for a little drive in our 1981 300TDT and I spotted this old Mercedes convertible in a parking lot all by itself. Hmmm, I thought "Maybe it's for sale?"
Not that I could even afford a new set of tires for it, but naturally that was the first thought in my head.) I pretty much slammed on the brakes and pulled up next to it. Noone in sight, and top down (the car, not me) I started to drool over how immaculate the car was. Out of nowhere this gentleman appears and we start chatting. Turns out it is a 1957 190SL convertible. Up til 10 years ago this had spent all it's life in Germany. He had just replaced all the beautiful carpeting, red leather was in near mint condition, the engine had just been "redone" and when he showed me I assumed completely rebuilt as it was all gold, chrome and shiny shiny black. I was like a little kid in a candy store! I asked him how much he thought it was worth and he said "I was offered 32K and turned him down. Between $35 and $45K." gulp. Well, needless to say that made my day!! Anyone else on here have or know someone who has one of those? I would really like to see others photos. I did not have my camera with me and most likely will never see that beautiful car again. sniff. It's the little things that make me happy.

The 300SL is actually based on, and has the same wheelbase as the 190SL, but the two look quite different.

The cost for a late 50's 300SL are WAY up there.
