V8 logo on US G-class
 

Why is there a V8 logo on the G500? There isn't a V8 logo on any other M113 or M119 powered MB.

hehehe they put them on the W123's in Indonesia. I recall seeing 280E's with Automatic badges where Turbodiesel would be if it was the 300D.

I guess that's because every other 280E (actually most W123's) sold in Indonesia were manuals.

If my memory serves me right, when ordering a W140 in Europe, you have the option of delete the rear badge and substitute with a "V8" badge assuming you are ordering a S420 or S500.....and since G500 is such a low production car, they might as well put a V8 badge on it to make it even more exclusive.... hehe, just a thought... :)

Badging is propaganda really. "Automatic" was put on to boast the Mercedes Auto box, a large feat in its day, to produce an automatic box, let alone your own. It was part of an effort to persuade drivers (mostly American) that european cars in fact do have auto boxes....

"Turbodiesel" was in effect the same way, meant to boast the first and only turbocharged passenger car diesel motor, and to prove on the open road that the power compared to the former "diesel" was not to be taken lightly, particularly from a stop light.

The V8 badge was in no doubt a throw back to the Euro market, being G wagens are indeed had with diesels, sixes and eights. If you know, Toyota, and Land Rover also have been known to use the badge, as an advert, that not only American trucks have V8s.

Remember in the nineties when GM cars had ABS on the trunklids.... LOL

Not that I'm aware of. I haven't seen a single W140 wearing a V8 badge. I have seen an E220 wearing a V12 badge, though... Most Europeans delete the badging as a matter of course.

i don't like too many badges. on the mercedes, i think the star and number speaks for itself.

it seems like some companies try to compensate a poor product for a lot of badges. i hate cars that say "abs", "srs", "v6" or other pointless things on them.

badges that indicate a difference among the same chassis are ok, such as "amg", "kompressor", or "4matic" (however i think bmw has a more subtle 4x4 badge with their 330ix). a "v12" badge is ok, although the "600" number should speak for itself.

i think mercedes is almost to the point where they are using excessive badging. of course a G500 has a V8, and someone who doesn't know that probably doesn't really care and won't acknowledge a badge that says it.

I guess my point is that less in this case is better: it offers a modest, classic look to the vehicle. Overall, Mercedes handles badges well and maintains a great looking car.

Toyota is one of the worst. Not only do they like to put their "T" badge on their cars, but they also like to spell out "Toyota" as well. Not to mention on their Sequoia... talk about an bad place to put a "V8" badge. That sure won't look good in 10 years.... almost like the "abs" badges look today.

Unfortunatly here in the UK still, ABS is a common badge to be found on the boot of many a car. Thankfully they have stopped putting 5 Speed badges on certain cars to boast the 5 forward gears they have.....oh dear.

V6 is another common one to be found..mainly because most UK cars are only 4 pots....hence seeing a badge marked "Straight 4" simply wouldnt raise the heart rate at all!
