new toy
Been running dsl here at the house for the past week or so. Really neat stuff :). I do have to disconnect/connect every now and then - it does not seem to be as "rock steady" as the phone line but it makes up for it by being really fast.

If you like DSL, try cable modem. It is even faster

Just got set up on satellite. Works great when it runs as they promised. Unfortunately, they seem to slowly degrade untill they barely beat a good dialup. Call 'em and they give a line of BS, but the connection mysteriously improves by a factor of 10.
My setup is kind of different. My neighbour bought the system, and was having massive troubles with networking his and his wifes PC's using a wireless USB connection. We ditched it and wired thier house with a 100base-T network. We then got the ides of sharing the connection, and splitting the cost since my phone was almost constantly busy with the amount of downloading that I do, not to mention that my best possible connection was only 26.4K. We then investigated laying a line between the two houses, but the distance was over 600 ft, and crossed two other properties. We finally elected to go wireless ethernet, which is working rock solid. My neighbour finished fixing the last of the bugs the other day, so now I'm gonna kill the dialup account. So, now I'm getting the high speed (when it actually is running high speed), for the same cost as dialup. |
Pretty slick. Cable modem is not available at my location. I tend to have to log off and back on alot but when I am on it is plenty fast. I sometime actually have to restart the computer. It cuts the time I am in front of the computer down alot.

Who's your satellite provider? Is the connection from the satellite box to the computer USB or a card? Thanks, Ken300D |
I use Alltel DSL here in North Ga. and it works all the time. I never have any problems with mine. Do you use Alltel? I know they are big in central and south Ga.

If you are considering Comcast, measure your connection speed for TWO months before changing your Emails. (my first month was 275k on average, then the speed d r o p p e d off the scale). In a nutshell, COMCAST SUCKS! thanks I feel better now! -tom |
Joe, I am running Alltel. Maybe something is not set up as well as it could be.

I am running the Alltel supplied filters.

Looking forward to getting DSL
I have already signed up with Sprint. They have to come out and do something on the lines before I can fire it up but hopefully I will be up an running this weekend.
I also bought a Linksys router so I can network our PC's. Question: did you find that you needed to put filters on your phones. I have read that DSL, when using the phone, can create some interferance. JCD |
if you have to use more than 5 filters, you need to get them to come out and install a main filter, then you wont have to worry about the line.
If it is constantly dropping, either they have a keep alive setup that keeps it alive for a certain time then drops it, or, they have some noise or somthing int he line causing ti to lose its sync. I have to reboot my DSL like maybe once a month if that. It is always on, and never needs to be reset unless a fluke happens. Alon |
It's not like I have to do anything to the dsl "modem". The dsl light and power is on it all the time. It seems my explorer "locks up" and does not find the site. Again, all the lights on the modem are on - power, dsl, usb. I actually have to close explorer or reboot the computer. Any help/guidance will be appreciated.

cable modems and e-mail
aTOMic,
we also are running cable here - you may have to replace the modem (we did) to get back the good fast speed. the things are on 24/7 and after a while the electronics get fried. after we replaced it we're getting a steady 450kb/s speed. as far as e-mail goes why not sign up with gmx? they are the best in my experience - servers are hardly ever down. they are in munich so you have to know a little german to figure it out but then again we drive MB's so we all should know just a little german, right!? ;) they can be found at www.gmx.net. the free version gives you a 10 mb box. just follow the links and keep your german-english dictionary handy!:D |
aTomic,
Know what you mean. I was lucky to have connection at all in the begining being in a new development. I have been getting very good speed once Comcast ironed out everything. |
I use the supplied filters as well. I do remember right at first I had a few problems like you have mebtioned. The CS hotline told me to unplug the main power cord to the box and reboot at the same time. Plug it back in as you computer is rebooting. I have not had any trouble since. I hope this helps.
later, ps- did you ever buy the 240d in No. Ga.? I may be interested if you have the info. Thanks! |
