What's your best golf score?
I have been playing golf more often than ever before lately. My scores previously were always over 100. I bought a new set of really nice Titleist DCI 990 clubs, and after only two games, my best score is now 82!!!!! The first time I played with the new clubs, I got an 88!.
Good clubs really do help the game, my old clubs were a cheap set, and my game suffered. the new clubs have transformed my game. Anyone int he LA Area that wants to get together on a weekend for a golf game, let me know, I'm always down on a saturday or sunday. Alon

I'm embarrassed to admit that I've never broken 100.
People ask me what me handicap is. I just say "golf". Or if they ask me, "do you play golf"? I usually answer, "well, you wouldn't call it golf".

ashman,
all kidding aside, what you posted is more mind boggling than any golf infommercial i have ever seen on the golf channel. you went through breaking 100 then breaking 90 in two games which you attribute to a simple change of golf clubs. i am not questioning your credibility but those must have been some really *****ty clubs you were playing with!

My Dad (recently retired) had just started taking up golf again. He went to the greens with his "Arnold Palmer" clubs he purchased back in the 1960's!!! A friend had enlightened him about the difference a good set of clubs make. So he let my Dad borrow his Pings that weekend, and amazingly, he did shave about 10-12 points off his score, without changing his playing style! I will note that when I played that one time, I borrowed my Dad's clubs...perhaps I can take 200 points off my score, possibly breaking 100!!! :p

g-benz,
i suppose that can happen - you gotta compare apples to apples. when i started playing again with 20 year old clubs, i really stunk (and never was any good to start with). then i happened to try one of the range's 5 irons which had modern cavity backed, oversized heads (mine were the old fashioned blades with tiny heads). it made a huge difference. my point is that nowadays, even cheap kmart clubs can be halfway decent depending on your level of play. maybe going from low 100's to high 80's isn't such a stretch, i've known for it to happen but with lots of practice! which may really be what's behind ashman's story...

I usually only play twice a year... My old clubs I got for real cheap, a couple of years ago, and believe me, when hitting them you could feel how bad and hollow feeling they were.
IF you hit the ball in the least bit wrong, you were guaranteed a bad shot. With the new clubs, even if I connect wrong, the clubs don't feel like it, and the ball still goes pretty good. I have played more this summer, so yes I am a bit up on my game, but over the years playing with my previous clubs, I never broke 100 except maybe once or twice. clubs can and do make a difference. I went and hit many different clubs, and the clubs I got with the way I play, hit great and to me were a better cllub than t thers on the markets. For me the results are very drastic. My brother got himself a new set of clubs a year or two ago, and has consistantly shot under 90 since he got the clubs. My friend also just got a new set of clubs, and has never played better in his life, scoring a 74 as his lowest ever score the 3rd time playing with his new clubs. On another note, balls can also make a difference. I have tried most balls on the market, and overall, I like the titanium balls a lot. But the best balls I have ever used are the Titleist Pro V1. Most may not notice the difference, but the difference is there. Since I switched to the titleist balls, I have been getting more distance than any other ball I have tried. Good equipment is the key to a better game. There is a difference between easy to hit forgiving clubs and scorign clubs. I bought scoring clubs, which allow you better ball control and you have to work harder to hit the ball right. With more forgiving and oversized head clubs, you will be more consistant with your shots, but you are not going to lower your score as much as you will with a set of clubs used for scoring. I have tested this, by demoing various clubs, and every club feels and plays different. I've tested The Callaway's, the Ping's, Taylor Made, Titleist, Nike, etc, and the club I hit the best with are the ones I bought. I've played with them twice and as you can see, I'm very pleased with them. Alon

12 years ago, when my index was around 3 and I was more flexible and athletic, I posted a 66 in a tournament at Elkhorn Country Club in Stockton. That was the only score I've ever posted in the 60s and was fueled by a double eagle that I never even saw (we thought I'd hit 2-iron over the green on a par 5, and after looking for awhile, one of my competitors walked by the hole and saw it there). I've lost the card, but it had the double-bird and three birdies on it. I'm now way too busy with work, girlfriend and kids to maintain the game I had when in my mid-30s. Now, I'm mostly a mid-high 70s player. I am quite proud, however, of having last week played the front nine at Carnoustie one over and making birdie on the 18th (beat Jan Van de Velde's score there from the Open Championship by a nice margin). There were holes in between that were disasters (but only from a scoring standpoint - the course and the experience were incredible). Both days I played the Old Course at St. Andrews, I parred the Road Hole and the 18th. On the first day, much like Tiger Woods' Open Championship at the Old, I didn't play from one bunker. (I also didn't hit many greens in regulation or make many putts...) I carded a 75 at the Balcomie Course at Crail Golfing Society in Crail in the afternoon after playing the Old Course for the second time that morning - Crail is apparently the second oldest golfing society in history; the Balcomie Course was laid out in 1795 or so. Of course, I think par at Balcomie is 70....
If you want to be bored out of your mind, just ask me about golf.... Where do people not members of golf clubs play in the LA area these days? Is it still nearly impossible to get on at the public courses there? When I lived in Santa Monica eons ago, Rancho was a tough time and Griffith Park wasn't much easier.

I play all over, Calabasas, Buena Ventura, Woodley Lakes, Rancho, Griffith, Balboa, Encino, Sandpiper, Cascades, Brookside, Malibu, Braemar and any others I can find.
I have a pre registration card, so I can register for my tee times days in advance. I have a rancho tee time I scheduled yesterday for saturday morning at 6:40 am. Gotta love the game. Last week, I played at lake elizabeth, and did a whole day as many holes as you can play for $40. Was a great day, lots of fun, and got in just a hair over 60 holes. Of course I had a lot of fun, playing all day, and would do it again, but I didn't particularily enjoy the course as much as other courses. I also play sometimes at private clubs, and i do enjoy a good par 3 course from time to time to work on my short game. Lately I have been way more into golf, and if I can bring my score down to par or below on a consistant basis, I'll be trying to enter some tournaments just because. All I have to get to complete my new set of clubs is a nice 3 wood if I decide I actually need one, and I want a scotty cameron putter real bad, just bought one for my brother brand new for $162.00 on sale, a helluva price. IT was a belated birthday gift. Alon
