Help with a college paper

Thought I would ask for everyones help on this topic. I have a short paper due on this and could use some opinions.


"Why should the US continue to trade with China"

If you want to be able to afford something, then we need China to make things for us. Reason... because Chinese labor is A LOT cheaper than American. We have minimum wage.. they don't.

To take Snibble's answer further, comparative advantage is the big reason. Mostly because of cheap labor, China has a comparative advantage in the production of many labor intensive mass produced goods. By trading with China and purchasing these items cheaper than if they had been made in the USA (or Canada) we are better able to pursue production of goods or services in which we have a comparative advantage, and to maximize our production in those areas. If this is managed properly both countries should see increased efficiencies in production.

Over a billion people, very few wear jeans. Make jeans in China for a buck a pair, slap on an American lable, sell 'em for $50 a pair. Don't even have to worry about longshoreman strikes on the West Coast.

More serious answer -- if the US doesn't someone else will. Whose propaganda would the US rather accompany goods China imports?

It will also continue to be the fastest growing consumer market in the world.

Further, if we don't trade with China and invest in plants and production facilities in China, then other countries will, and we'll be locked out.

Also, get this.

I was reading in the sports section of one of the newpapers somewhere in the country about the 7'5" Chinese basketball player called Yao Ming, who plays for the Houston Rockets.

One of the executives or the commissioner of the NBA asked the interviewer of the newspaper if he knew which country has the most number of people watching the average NBA game.

Guess what? It's China. There are more Chinese people in China watching the average NBA game than there are Americans in the U.S.

See? There's a whole country of people from which we can sell products to (jersey's, basketballs, TV rights, etc.) from which we can derive revenue and profits.

Amazing, isn't it?

The US traded with Iran under the Shah, Hussein in Irag in past years, and the Saud monarchy in Saudi Arabia, not to mention Allende in Chile. Why is there any question about China--are they not authoritarian enough?

those places you mentioned did not carry on huge manufacturing operations using forced labor (or maybe they did but not on the same scale)...

I believe 420 SEL hit it on the head. For an economy to develop specialization occurs one saw this as our own US economy evolved from the pioneer days. At first every one would make/grow what ever they needed as best as possible, but eventually we figured out that we were all better at something than others and therefore we specialized and traded goods with each other. A blacksmith, carpenter, farmer, teacher, etc. Leading to lower and lower costs and higher and higher income and more and more free time!

On a global scale the same thing is true therefore one must have seamless transfer of capital and labor between coountires for the world economy as a whole to progress.

But the assumptions here are seamless, ie no protectionism, no tariffs and an open culture. Nationalism, tariffs etc can stem the tide of imported goods therefore providing trade surpluses to one side over the other and this leads to lopsided growth of the trading partners.

England practiced this in their colonial days but eventually the system broke down.

Well I wanted thank all of you for the help on this paper and to let ya'll know that I got an "A." That feels good. Anyhow I have a new paper due and again I'm asking for your imput.

Topic:

The teacher asked us to write a paper about taking a product to a foreign country and how we would accomplish this. This is from beginning to end. I choose Japan as the country and my product is a golf divot tool. Bascially I'm looking at having it built here and then shipped over for distrubution. Is anyone in international business or know of the proper channels to get a product to Japan?

You'd have to hook up with one of the large Japanese trading companies or distribution companies to handle your product.

You'd never be able to do it without a strong Japanese partner.
