Michael Lewis, The New New Thing (A Silicon Valley Story)

Which is actually an old old thing right now (so 1999), but I just caught up with it. About Jim Clark, who created Silicon Graphics, then Netscape.

I'll read anything Lewis writes - Liar's Poker: Rising Through the Wreckage on Wall Street, was a hoot; Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game and The Blind Side: Evolution of a Game were also terrific.

I love M Lewis's books. I read Liar's Poker and The New New Thing both.

charles limbergh was an incredibly skilled and thoughtful pilot at a time when a lot of them died in their planes. his flying of the atlantic earned him such huge popularity that his life was forever changed.

he was even bigger then elvis....worldwide too. across all social classes. kings and prime miinsters wanted their pictures taken with him.

i am at the part where right before ww2 he was wined and dined by the germans and convinced that they held total air supremecy and therefore could not be beaten. he is now going around scaring the pants off the english and french leaders. it appears he may have single handedly assisted the germans hugely in their drive to achieve appeasement.....at the time their air force was actually pretty infantile and not that well developed.

more to come.

Tom, I think that I read the same Lindberg bio that you're reading a couple of years ago. It was good, and he was quite an impressive figure, a real superstar as you noted. His image got pretty tarnished when he advocated against getting ito the war, though. Many called him a Nazi sympathizer. I think he was just so awed by the state of their aeronautical engineering that that transcended his political thinking.

I happen to know someone whose father flew with Lindberg on occassion. I love to read about people who have achieved great things in life. I encourage my kids to do that, too. Wish I'd started earlier.

. . .

Are you kidding me, JD? I'd love to have one of those. I still the A Time To Kill is Grisham's best book. If you've got a case of them and want to get rid of one now, PM me.

yep, just because he was a superstar in the air did not give him any special judgment in the area of politics.

but because of his great esteem he was listened to too much.

I recently read Confessions of an Economic Hit Man. It is an easy read with a good mix of entertainment and information. Puts a perspective on US world situation that is not often talked about.

Confessions of an economic hitman was pretty good. A Game as old as Empire follows up on that with other people's stories and author of confessions also has another book out now too.
