Phantom Islands of the Atlantic--Johnson
Murdoch--Metaphysics as the Guide to Morals
Kuehn--Kant: A Biography
Williams--Truth and Truthfulness
??--School of the Assassins (2 of my friends recently were released from prison after being jailed for protesting the school)
Camping and Caravanning France
A Year in Paradise: How we lived our dream--possibly the worst sailing book I have ever read. The best was the Strange Last Voyage of Donald Crowhurst.

I absolutely love Endurance. Did you see the recent PBS Nova show on Shakleton? I even made a pilgrimage to NYC a few years ago to see the James Caird when it was on display at the Natural History Museum.

Hello Kerry,

Can you tell me more about the School of Assassins book, is it about the military school that the US was accused of training in South America somewhere. My memory is dim on this one.

Hello Hill,

I still enjoy a trashy, quick fun read, here are some recommendations

Dirty White Boys by Stephen Hunter

Striptease by Carl Hiaasen or any of his books that you can find.

Prizzi's Honor by Richard Condon

Give me some time and I'll come up with a better list.

Vanakin:
Yes, it used to be called the Schooll of the Americas and I think it was located in Panama at one time. It is now located in Georgia and is called the Institute for Western Hempisphere Cooperation. It has trained many South American military leaders who have been involved in brutal repression of the citizens of their country and awful murders. The people who either carried out or ordered the killing of the Jesuit priests, their housekeeper and 12 yr old child in El Salvador were trained at the school. The military commander who began the practice of pushing people out of helicopters was trained at the school.

I'm reading,

"Napoleon - A Biography" - Frank McLynn
"Six Armies in Normandy" - John Keegan (re-read)
"Anna Karenina" - Tolstoy

I just read a pretty funny non-PC book by Dan Jenkins, his latest about a golf pro. "The Money-Whipped, Steer Job, Three Jack Give Up Artist." Read it and try to figure out who all the fictional PGATour professionals really are. Talk about treating Tiger with kid gloves....

Also on my nightstand and next to be picked up:

"Theodore Rex" Edmund Morris (biography of Teddy Roosevelt)
"Silent Night - The Story of the World War I Christmas Truce" Stanley Weintraub
"BMW '02 Restoration Guide" Mike MacCartney

Also a book the title and author I can't remember, but the author took 6 battles from history and used them to examine why western civilizations prevail typically over eastern civilizations in conflict.

That's been recommended a few times before. A coupla times by me. If not for the monetory wisdom the fact that he recommends you purchase a Mercedes Benz and drive it for life! Although, these days that can be debated, and it has!

Very impressive

....reading lists. In light of what you are all reading I am almost embarrassed to admit that I just finished reading a little novel called THE LOVELY BONES. I am not much given to sentimental fiction, my modern fiction tastes run more to the likes of Scott Turow (who is a far better lawyer-fiction writer, in my opinion, than Grisham) and Dean Kuntz (who, again in my opinion, is a better writer King). But after the recent death of my beloved dog Pepper I have been more reflective than I normally am. After reading this book I can now imagine Pepper, in doggie heaven, chasing (but never catching) rabbits, waiting for all of us to be united once again. The dad in the book reminded me of the kind of dad that I try to be to my kids.

The book, written from the perspective of a little girl who is raped and then murdered and is now in Heaven, is hauntingly bitter-sweet. It reminds me a lot of the play Our Town. I was at B&N, waiting for one of my daughters to come out of hte movies. I picked up the book by chance and began readign it. I just couldn't stop reading, so I had to buy it. The story may be a bit sappy at times, but it is never boring and the writer never insults the reader's intelligence.

I read that several years ago and found it very good indeed. There's a section on car-buying that is good. I know a lot of us on this forum can identify with that. I recommend The Millionaire Next Door and the follow up to that, The Millionaire Mind to all my friends.

Constantly, Hill. I can start reading a good novel and forget everything else around me.

Cripes! A collection of Thomas the Tank Engine tales. What a difference three years makes.
