What do y'all think?

Available to me for purchase at around $5000, and yes, I am aware of which forum I'm posting this on... :-)

1988 BMW 325i cabrio. 165K miles. Maintained by dealer prior to warranty expiration, then by very good independent after expiration. Exterior and interior nearly flawless, mechanically probably close to as perfect as a car this age can be - I know the mechanic personally, I know the owner very well (partner) and I see the car every day in the garage here at work. Based on the driving style of the owner, it hasn't been abused - believe me. Recent timing belt and clutch. Brand new Michies. Oiled and filtered up every 4000 miles, all records extant.

I like the idea of some open-top cruising, but can't afford a Z3, don't really want a Japanese roadster. Would likely tweak it with a few performance goodies - a chip, new suspension pieces.

What do y'all think?

I actually kinda like the looks of the '88 3-series cabrio.

But, if it was me, I'd figure a way to get an older SL instead

I'd buy it. Those cars have great reputations. I almost bought an '88 325e convertible with a 5-speed for $5,500 2 years ago, and it was in rough shape.

Thanks guys. I kind of like the idea myself. If it happens, I'm sure my signature below will change. (My kids will have to name it first.)

Fun car, and relatively inexpensive to maintain. But if you really want to hae some fun with it, take it up to Bill Arnold BMW Repair(Marin Co.) and have Bill put an E30 M3 engine in it. That's what he did with his own E30 cabrio, and it is a complete *party*..
