My mom has bulges like that in her '94 Pontiac Grand Prix. They aren't worth trying to use; if the cup isn't the same size as the bulge it'll start moving all over the place.
At the local M-B dealers around here, they have flip-down cup holders that you can mount to the door panels. They're a bit pricy, but I"m thinking about buying one for each door when I can afford it...they even come in the various M-B interior colors They also look to be adjustable...I haven't actually used one; has anyone on here by chance?

the ones at the dealerships aren't that hot. they look ok but you have to adjust them to fit whatever drink you are holding. the one i put on i found at the miata clubs. it's self adjusting and i think a few members have put them on too.
serious cup holder

Here is the thread that shows that cup holder in my W124:
http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?threadid=51734&highlight=cup You mount it on the same place on the door that you would the kind that are available from the dealer. I bought mine from www.griotsgarage.com and it is the same cupholder used in the SL500.

The black kind are about the same height length and width as the ones at the dealer, but are about a 1/2" thicker.
We both have W124's and I don't find them bulky, or in the way at all. When I was mounting them, I experimented with positioning on the door, and how they would interfere with the lateral movement of my knee, as if I was resting my knee against the door while driving. If I mounted the cupholder too far toward me, then it would hit my knee. That is why I mounted it pretty far forward on the door near the hinge. I also still have room to reach around it and pull on the brake release lever. But the kind from the dealer would stick out just as much as the black kind do when in the down position, so this can't be the source of the bulkiness. Maybe you mean they look "bulky" and I guess they do from an apparence standpoint. The best part of the black kind, though, is that the cup holder mechanism pops open when you fold down the lid, and it automatically adjusts to the size of the beverage container. The kind from the dealer is pretty antiquated and every adjustment is manual. You have to fold down the lid, raise the left arm, raise the right arm, and then ratchet open or ratchet closed each arm to fit the size of your beverage container. I decided it was too inconvenient. Plus, even though the cupholders from the dealer are available in factory colors to match your interior color, I found that the parchment color of the cupholder didn't match the parchment color of my interior very well at all. Just my $.02.

they are somewhat bulky but the self-adjusting feature is worth it. it holds a tall latte as well as a big gulp without having to change anything. i haven't seen anything else that has a mechanism as good...

Shanta, maybe you should offer it up for sale to someone on this site?

I bookmarked the page on griotsgarage...I think I'll go that route instead; cheaper and easier to use...can't complain there Thanks for mentioning this; good thing I saw this before getting the ones from the dealer...

Maybe this is a good opportunity to buy the one from Shanta?

Yeah, no kidding.
I think the idea just sort of sputtered out. Mushedroom started the thread, but has sort of disappeared from action. I figure I'll just buy a set from e-bay when I'm ready.
