Computer photo/picture manipulation...
 

Greetings,
I just got this new Canon digital camera, but the software they give me doesn't allow me to effectively manipulate the size and resolution of the pictures. Go to my makeshift website (address below in my signature). When I shrink the size of a photo, white fills into the areas where photo once was. What happens is that the frame of the picture stays the same, but the image inside of it shrinks. I cannot post anything on this message board because all the files I have are too large in data size. Does anyone know of a downloadable tool for manipulating computer pictures? I'd rather not spend all the money on Adobe Photoshop. Thanks so much for the help!

I too got a new canon digi cam, The included software is a bit week. What you may consider is uploading your pictures to a picture hosting site.. Such as www.villagephotos.com this is what I do and it works great and is free. When you link photos from a hosting site there is no size limitations...... Happy posting

iPhoto works quite well and it's free.

Where can I download iPhoto for free? The Apple website wants $50 for it. Thanks!

I use Macromedia fireworks and it works well for a fraction of the cost.

I think what you need to do is reduce the resolution as compared to making the picture smaller....If you want the actual picture which gets posted to not include certain stuff then you should crop it....
Check out Photoisland.com ... they have free software on a rotating basis so you have to check often.. One of them is easy to use for the above mentioned processes....signing up is free...

If you leave it as a very big file and just link to it.. it really slows down those of us using a dial up modem... I have quit some threads after waiting 6 minutes for it to load... so 'web resolution' is a better deal....

You might want to check out Irfanview. It's a freeware graphics program that is one of the best ones out there. Not nearly as full-featured as Photoshop Elements, but it's a compact, very fast piece of software.

They've just annouced that iPhoto 2 will be available Jan 25th (for free download, or $50 bundled with other stuff on a CD), and the current version was hard to find but I found it. It is here. A free download. HTH.

Thanks everyone for the great replies. Of course I wasn't thinking and didn't realize that Apple would create iPhoto for Macs, one of which I do not have. I will try some of the other suggestions though.

I recently upgraded to cable internet so I know what you mean about waiting with a dial-up modem. Don't worry, I'll keep the images to small, manageable sizes.

Since you say you don't own a Mac, I will *assume* you are running Windows. Do you have Microsoft Office? And if so, do you have the original CD? Office includes a rudimentary photo editor that is not installed by default, and almost nobody uses it because it does so little. However, it is the perfect tool for resizing pictures like you need to do here. If you have it, I can walk you through the procedure.

Don't use Microsoft Photo editor to resize photos, (Not sure if that's the one with Office referred to above) because it uses a dreadful algorithm that makes a resized picture look ABSOLUTELY dreadful..

If you have the coreldraw illustrating software, its usually bundled with various extras including "photopaint", a reasonably functional image editting software.
