scooter-ific
well it has been about 70 degrees in atlanta the past several days, so i got the fever to fire up one of the toys:
50cc of raw power nestled in the beastly honda spree! :p it hadnt done the ring-a-ding-ding in over 3 years, but suprisingly caught after about a dozen swift kicks! aired the tires and took a couple of scorching laps around the neighborhood. all noise and two cycle smoke! i was very suprised that it fired. when i got it many years back, it had been setting for about 4 years and it took MANY sessions of soaking in an ultrasonic cleaner to get the carb ungunked. its now ready for racing season, that is to throw in the truck to take to the races at road atlanta! i go for porsche club events, bike races and historic/vintage auto events. the cool thing is, you can take a scooter (or such) anywhere there in the facility! you can even camp and build a fire to set around drinking your own beer! i highly recommend Road-A to everyone. i challenge ALL diesels to a smoke-off contest this spring |

I just got in from having been riding around the neighborhood on the Yamaha Jog (after a couple miles on the bicycle). I thoroughly enjoy riding scooters and have been doing it for a long, long time. They are very handy at drag races and such.

I had a go ped for a while, one of the first ones out. it went 18mph, and could run for 45 minutes on one tank of gas, and only weighed in at 18 lbs.
Hella fun little scooter. Rode it up tot he market near my house on more than one occassion. Too bad someone broke in to our house and stole it along with the go cart (that thing was hella fun - I remember using it to pick up girls who went to the all girls school - at the time - and it worked. they all wanted to ride on the porsche bodied go-cart). come on eric, cough up the dough.
i know there was enough coins in the "sock-o-quarters" we all saw for a scoot, unless that was really wooden nickels (or canadian $ ) ps- i like the improved sig better, its easier on the eyes. |

Go-peds are fun, they are nowhere near a easily maneaverable as a honda spree though! My friend bought a spree from some guy he found in the newspaper for 100$.. Thats a lot of fun for a hundred bucks.

Is it just me, but are the prices of scooters ridiculous? You can't really get into a new, street legal one for less than $1500. The biggest joke is the new Honda "Ruckus" http://www.hondamotorcycles.com/scooters/model.asp?ModelName=Ruckus&ModelYear=2003&ModelId=NPS503 It is a Honda Metropolitan, minus the body work for a $200 premium. Does that make sense to you? I also like the new big cycles. Like the Honda Silverwing. http://www.hondamotorcycles.com/scooters/model.asp?ModelName=Silver+Wing+ABS&ModelYear=2003&ModelId=FSC600A3 600cc and 8 grand? That isn't a scooter. Personally, I'd take a used sport bike for $3-4grand and not have the neighborhood questioning my sexuality. :p All kidding aside, for the money, scooters are just too much, new.

I picked up the Jog for $600 with 1500 miles. Purchased it from a fella at work that had it in his shed. His kids had outgrown it. Had to clean it up a little and I am using tie wraps to hold the fiberglass trim around the headlight on. If you can find one on ebay close by then it may be a good place to pick one up. I totally agree that they are overpriced especially considering that if there will be boys riding it they are going to break the body up somewhat.
I think they are a blast to drive/ride around on and wish they were as popular in the states as on the other side of the pond . I like the Ruckus and I imagine the Elite 80 would be sweet for running back and forth to the store but I would never pay those prices for them.

paid $200 for the spree, not running. after ungunking the carb, it spews smoke as it should and is unfashionably loud.
no title, no tag, no problem! used mainly as a pit bike and for cool-off blasts around the neighborhood. IF johnny law did spot me, it would be cheaper to pitch it in the ditch and run than to pay whatever ticket/fine/bulls#!t they felt was deserved. ah, to be an OUTLAW !!! :p however, the REAL bike is ridden with a "M" endorsement on the license, valid insurance, current tag and registration, and most importantly, a Motorcycle Safety Foundation rider course completion certificate! where i go for "sport" riding in the GA/TN mountains, they frequently setup roadblocks to stop any bikes that even resemble sportbikes for "documentation checks". they wave cars by, but stop the bikes to check all your paperwork. if you cant present any of the mentioned three items, "you're in a heapa trouble boy" !!! |
