War Aside
Watching CNN and I have been interested in the different vehicles being driven by Iraqis. While watching live shots of Bagdad, I am amazed by how much traffic is still visible in the city, even during air strikes. Where are these people going?. Work, shopping?.
Another of lifes great mysteries seems to have been answered as well, "Who bought all those VW Dashers?", has anyone else noticed there seems to be quite a few. Noticed quite a few larger Japanese sedans as well as the usual Chevs. How and where do they still get the parts for those I wonder. That reminds me of the Iraqui Malibu, anyone else remember when GM got stuck with a huge order of Chev Malibus in about 1982, they were special ordered with heavy duty suspension, and floor shift standard transmissions and A/C. Everything else was bare basic trim. I had a co worker who's father bought one. |

Howdy Crownwayne,
Chevy Malibu with stick shift and A/C. Take away the A/C and it sounds like the typical option equiped muscle car from the 60s

I lived in the Middle East for 10 years and can tell you that, aside from Saudi Arabia which mostly favors American cars, most other Gulf Arab states use anything with a wheel in each corner. In Dubai, UAE the long haul (between cities) taxies were Peugeot station wagons. The local taxis were Toyota Cresadas. These were always refered to as 'taxi Toyotas' and never Cresedas. This was the finest model that Toyota ever made. I had one for about 9 years and nothing could stop it. And if it did stop, every little shop along the way could fix it.
The ruling family and its offspring drove what ever cost the most money. The standard car was the Mercedes and it escalated from there. I frequently went into the Sheiks garage in Abu Dhabi. It was full of every sort of luxury car from Mercedes 600 Pullman (waiting for suspention repairs)to the latest Italian sports job to 6 door Range Rovers (for the Sheik's wives). The storage sheds around the perimiter were full of what ever kind of car that took the fancy of the local royal family playboys. Most people have never seen that kind of concentration of luxury cars outside of a European car show. Trucks were mostly Mercedes as is the case throughout most of Asia and Africa. In your wildest dream you can't imagine how many warm bodies they can cram onto one truck. In Pakistan and India they remove the cab and build wooden ones that are done up like the dog's dinner. They make our semis look plain Janes. The place you want to visit for old cars in not Cuba but Uraguay. It is like stepping back into the late 30's. They all run and look great. |
