Anyone know what the torque converter does on the transmission??????? I was told that a new one might fix my reverse problem on an 87 suburban. Any help appreciated!!
Joe.

Usually when I've ever seen a bad torque converter, it's affected all the gears, not just reverse. But who knows. It's a Chevy

The torque convertor fills the same role as a clutch in a manual tranny. It also drives the the hydraulic fluid pump to run the transmission, allowing it to function. If only reverse is out on your 'burban, then more than likely, there is a seal that has gone bad internally along the "plumbing" that operates the clutch packs for reverse. Nothing short of an overhaul will fix that. Torque convertor problems affect all tranny performance, so that is not going to be your problem.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I will be looking at the car again in a couple of weeks. The car is in Windham NY and I am in New Jersey. I only get there every month or so. I will post an update after I work on the car.
I have found a used trans for $250.00 at a scrap yard. I might try that. Joe.

Beware the junkyard trans unless you can verify the donor vehicle. Every one that I've bought that wasn't documented on the mileage and condition, was dead within a few months.
