Any Porsche owners out there?

I was curious if anyone out there owns a Porsche too? Tell us the year, model, and why you chose that particular car over any other sports car.

I used to own an 87' 944 Turbo until I sold it last year. I am planning on purchasing an 89' 944 Turbo, Mint condition with 25K miles. It is Guards red/black and is extremely difficult to find this year turbo in this condition. Now.....how do I tell the wife?

25K on a 1987 944 T? Sounds fishy, but if it gets the nod from a Porsche garage go for it. I almost bought a Ferrari 1989 328 with 620o miles on it, the Ferrari dealer told me that I would be better off with 50,000 on it because if they sit, they rot.

Problems are not apparent up front but when you stretch their legs the blood starts to flow.

Good luck!!

BTW I had a buddy in HS with a 944 we had a blast in that thing I still like the looks.

I can't remember the numbers but the turbo felt pretty fast.

I am an ex-Porsche owner. My list is pretty short:

1987 911 Turbo - blue/black, bone stock except for a KKK higher boost waste gate. Sold with 190,000 kilometers on 'er, and a file folder 3 inches thick with bills.

1969 911S - red/black, PO added whale tail. Light and agile, missed dearly. Even though it was down on power compared to big inch bruisers, I dusted more than a few V-8 pony cars on mountain roads.

Will another Porsche come to roost? Probably not. Parts and service are outrageously expensive, and build quality is suspect no matter the model or year. I understand Boxsters are getting good reliability reviews, but I know a few owners and all report lots of troubles.

For less money than a base 911, I can buy an new E55 Kompressor. For less money that a new 911 Turbo, I can get an SL55. I'd rather have the MB products in both cases.

Don't even get me started about the Cayenne. Saw my first one in traffic the other day. It's U-G-L-Y. The first Porsche in a long time that made me stare for the WRONG reason. Too bad.

I used to work for a guy who restored aircool Porsches. I still love them to death, quirks and all. If I were to get one it would be a '73 Carrera RS.

there was a known weakness in the mains on the 944T engines requiring bottom end work around 50k miles so low miles is a big plus...

A real Porsche, one which pays homage to its Volkswagen pedigree

I have a 78 924, it handles like a million bucks but doesn't cost a fortune to own.

Didn't the 924 have the Audi engine?

I owned a 1987 944T for 5.5 years, and sold it after I bought my 1992 500E. The guy I sold the 944T to took a look through my maintenance folder and when he was done, looked at me, and said, "Wow, you spent a lot of money on this car."

I paid $10,000 for it and then immediately put $2500 into (probs ID'd from PPI included the usual 944 suspects: water pump, entire front engine seals, all the belts, oil cooler gasket, lower control arms). During the course of ownership, I easily spent another $7000 to $8000 on maintenance over and above the usual oil changes and regular maintenance intervals. It was a great car and fun to drive, but boy, did I take a bath with it (and it wasn't even a bathtub!).

The 500E, on the other hand, has needed only a battery in 2.5 years of ownership, plus a coolant system flush and regular oil changes.

BlackMercedes: On the subject of Boxster quality, take a look at the April 2003 issue of Road & Track. On p. 125, they have an owner survey on the 1997-2001 Boxster, and owner after owner cited poor build quality as one of the Boxster's glaring defects. To quote the article: "Numerous, sometimes persistent, failures and quality lapses came as a rude surprise to some of the owners who had expected better of a car carrying a $40,000-plus price tag and the Porsche name."

My 1987 911 had lots of problems, but it was an "old" design, and even Japanese cars were just becoming "applicance" like at that time. Most of my glitches were electrical, around power seats, sunroof, windows, etc. The thing I hated was the COST of those repairs. Mechanically the car was very sound, but did have it's share of oil leaks.

The Boxster owners I've talked to seem to have the reverse. They have working accesories, but major mechanical failures. Engine problems seem fairly common. This does not sound like Porsche to me!

The other thing I hear is that the tops leak. Annoying in the rain, but not critical.

Of course, all us W124-036 owners can claim a Porsche pedigree! Wonder if they'd let us join their club?

I'd luv to have a little "Porsche Engineered" sticker somewhere on the car. :p

Used to have a 1979 911SC. Sold my 1973 450SL to buy it. After I drove the 160 miles homes after buying the Porsche, I kicked myself. Fun car but very uncomfortable!!

My brother has an 89 944 Turbo. He loves the car to drive but it is very expensive on parts and service, so he does whatever he can on it. He's in the Porsche Club and regularily takes it on the track. Last summer he blew the head gasket at Watkins Glen. He managed to do the work himself, which saved him mega bucks.
Make sure the timing belt has been changed on the one you're considering, it is a very expensive job.
